Chamber Ensemble
Plans Festival

The Lyric Chamber Ensem-
ble will present its third an-
nual piano fesitval 3:30 p.m.
March 24 at Orchestra Hall.
The first concert offers a
light program of orchestral
transcriptions and original
pieces for four pianos which
spans a variety of periods.
The repertoire was taken
from a collection of four-piano
transcriptions located by the
LCE in the archives of the
Lincoln Center Library in
New York.
Included on this program
for eight hands will be
Stravinsky's Petroushka,
Wagner's Ride of the
Valkyries, two Bach chorales,
Bach's Concerto in C for three
pianos and strings, Darius
Milhaud's Paris Suite, and
Danse Macabre by Saint
Saens. Performing in the con-
cert will be pianists Flavio
Varani, Steven Rosenfeld,
Louis Nagel and Fedora
Horowitz.
For ticket information, call
the Ensemble office,
357-1111.

Russian Farce
At Hilberry

The satirical farce, The
Suicide, written by Russian
playwright Nikolai Erdman,
will open at the Hilberry
Theatre 8 p.m. March 23. It
will run in repertory through
May 11.
Written in 1928, The
Suicide views the political
and economic confusion in
post-revolutionary Russia
through the eyes of a 'little
man," the unemployed and
discontented Semyon Se-
myonovich Podsekalnikov,
who threatens to commit
suicide.
Once word of his plan is out,
Semyon is besieged by a horde
of individuals — an intellec-
tual, a butcher, a Marxist, a
priest and a fading femme
fatale — who want him to die
for their purposes.
Not surprisingly, because of
its political implications, The
Suicide was banned in the
Soviet Union before glasnot.
Tickets may be purchased
at the Hilberry Theatre, Cass
and Hancock, or reserved by
calling the box office,
577-2972.
