They were a bit skeptical and
told him that they were a
group. The man left, return-
ing shortly with a loaf of
bread.
"This was his custom, his
joy and his pleasure," Ms.
Zorn said.
"When they saw their
group gathering for their
group service, they invited
the man to join them. He said
he would soon follow. The
group joined hands and began
to sing Hebrew songs when
the man approached again
this time bringing food for the
entire group of about 50
people.
Mr. Schwartz says, however,
that Israel has both negative
and positive aspects.
Israeli society is stressful,
Ms. Zorn agreed. "Anything
can happen," she said.
"Whether during wartime or
peacetime."
In Israel, everyone, whether
male or female, must serve in
the Army for 2-3 years.
"Someone I had become
friends with was killed while
doing reserve duty," Ms. Zorn
said. "They are all so
vulnerable. All go willing to
put themselves at risk while
their mothers sit and wait for
a phone call that may or may
not come."
Israelis also tend not to
really talk about the future,
Ms. Zorn said. "They live day
by day," she said. "They have
that idea that you just live to-
day because you never know
what tomorrow brings or if
you have tomorrow."
Nevertheless, people who
visit Israel can come away
with a feeling of attachment.
They speak of the culture and
the diversity of people who
live there.
"I love the culture," said Ms.
Zorn. "I love how you don't
have to go searching for it; it's
there!" ❑
