Special to The Jewish News
M
any young Jewish
adults desire to visit
Israel to capture the
spiritual and historical
essence of the land. Not all
have the chance to go there,
so they must travel through
the descriptions and ex-
periences of others.
Among those who do go to
/
Israel, some go with their _
— \
families while others are with
youth groups or university
programs. Each experiences
Israel in his or her own way.
According to one student
who made the trip to Israel
with a youth group, the ex-
perience was "quite power-
ful."
"It was really interesting
because you'd study about a
historical or religious site in
the country," said Susie Zorn,
an MSU freshman, "and then
you went there the next day
and saw it. It made it all the
more real. It wasn't like
learning it in Hebrew school."
Some youths find that when
they return from Israel, they
have formed a new connection
with the land.
Some who travel to Israel
with their families have their
bar or bat mitzvah at the
Western Wall, one of the
holiest sites for Jews, and also
visit Masada and other
tourist attractions. They
leave with memorable
experiences.
"The whole trip is positive,"
said Mathew Schwartz, an
MSU senior. "You go to
Masada — that's positive
because there's so much
heritage. There is so much
history and tradition in
Israel. To climb Masada is a
baroque extension of all your
dreams of Israel. Masada
holds a reminder for the
preservation of Israel to never
again stand naked to their
enemies."
The Western Wall is the
only wall remaining that at
one time surrounded the ho-
ly temple. "It is a place where
not only tourists, but also the
people of Israel go to pray,"
Ms. Zorn said. "They put
notes containing hopes and
wishes for the future in the
cracks of the wall."
Similarly, others have emo-
tional experiences. At the end
of a Sabbath service at the
Western Wall, a few youths
from Ms. Zorn's group were
waiting on a nearby hill for
the group to gather after they
had spent some private time
praying at the Wall. ,
An Israeli man approached
and offered to share his food.
