our seconds is a very
brief time, except in a
swimming race. But
Seth Berg of Huntington
Woods only needed two
weeks to shave four seconds
from his 100-yard
breaststroke time and turn a
major disappointment into a
personal triumph.
Berg is an 11th grader at
Berkley High School, presi-
dent of the student council
and co-captain of the swim
team. He has only been
swimming competitively
since the ninth grade.
Last year, Berg missed
qualifying for the Class A
Michigan High School
Swimming Championships
by 12/100s of a second. This
year he needed a 1:03.59 to
qualify.

He expected to reach his
goal three weeks ago in the
Southeastern Michigan
Association league cham-
pionships, but slipped off the
block as the race was being
started and was disqualified.
But Berg got a second
chance at the Falcon Invita-
tional, an extra meet put on
each year by Birmingham
Groves High School for area
swimmers who are close but
have not qualified for the
state meet.
Berg swam a 1:02.59 at
Groves, bettering the quali-
fying standard by a full se-
cond and giving him a rank-
ing of 12th in Class A for last
weekend's state meet at the
University of Michigan.
Berkley's medley relay
team, with Berg swimming
breaststroke, also qualified
at the Groves meet.

Last Friday, Berg dropped
an additional 2.4 seconds
(1:00.18) in his breaststroke
preliminary heat to put him
in sixth position for Satur-
day's championship. And on
Saturday he raced to a 59:94,
giving him fifth place and
Berkley's only points of the
meet, good for a tie for 30th
in the team standings.
Also in the breaststroke,
senior Mark Golding con-
tributed five points to
Bloomfield Hills Andover's
second consecutive state
championship. Golding fin-
ished eighth in the 100
breast with a 1:00.96.
Sophomore Aaron
Heilbrun helped Groves to
finish in second place behind
Andover. Heilbrun swam a
leg on Groves' 200-yard

freestyle relay, which fin-
ished fourth in 1:27.37.
Berg began swimming
competitively when
longtime friend Gabe Bodzin
convinced him to go out for
swimming, instead of
basketball, in the ninth
grade. "I wasn't very good,"
Berg says, "but I decided to
stay with it even after Gabe
left Berkley because our
coach, Cheri Amos-
Helmicki, is the best I've
ever had in any sport. I give
her the credit for the way I
swam."
