Downriver Recycling Center was established in response to the need for alternatives to total disposal in landfills. The Heat and Warmth Fund (THAW) is a last-resort fund to assist families and individuals with energy bills who are in danger of shut off. Opportunities for a nearly limitless range of volunteers will be highlighted. Operation Transition c/o Community Placement 140 Elizabeth Lake Road Pontiac, MI 48341 This is a hospital-based pro- gram which helps bring the community and persons with psychiatric disabilities closer together. It offers such services as weekly outings, creature ac- tivities such as arts and crafts adn cooking, group outings (the zoo, parks, concerts, bowl- ing, sporting events, etc.). Operation Transition also pro- vides outreach to the com- munity through education, in- teraction and advocacy. Volunteers are needed to ac- company small groups of pa- tients from Clinton Valley Center on outings in the com- munity. Volunteers are also needed to share special skills with patients, and to work on community education on issues of mental illness and the needs of individuals mak- ing the transition back to the community. Box 430425 Pontiac, MI 48343 Caregivers provides ser- vices such as friendly visita- tion, minor home repairs, telephone reassurances and other services that enable seniors and handicappers to remain independent in their own homes. The clients serv- ed by the agency often have no other support systems, and are in danger of institutionalization without the help of Caregivers. Volunteers are needed to coordinate and distribute fresh fruits and vegetables in the winter months, deliver holiday meals, provide local transpor- tation, and other services listed above. Project: Capture A Rainbow P.O.Box 06775 Detroit, MI 48206 Project: Capture a Rainbow is a non-profit non-partisan organization designed to ser- vice children, youth and their families. The focus is to pro- vide the inner-city community with an academic curriculum that deals with individual as well as group needs. The cur- riculum builds life skills which enhance values vital to paren- ting, family living, self concept, etc. Volunteers are needed to tutor youths aged 6 to 17, and aduls 18+ in basic reading and math skills. Estimated time commitment: 3 hours per month (1 Saturday per month). Greater time corn- mitments are welcome.
