Complete Auto Repair a Foreign & Domestic mony could be as simple as peeling carrots over a gar- bage can and standing over a stove tending to a pot of rice. No one seemed to care who did what or who worked together as long as the meal was ready on time. Olivia Denha, 13, is too young to be part of the Chal- dean youth group, but she begged her sister, Dalia, 15, if she could come to serve the families. "I just wanted to help out," Olivia said. "I lik- ed the idea and the way everyone has to work together." An hour after they started, an informal buffet with garden salad, pasta salad, rice, green beans, chicken, hot rolls, baklava and soft drinks was laid out on the kitchen counter top. From one side of the kitchen, the teens watched as the families piled the food onto their plates and went into the dining room to eat. While the teens couldn't help but wonder if the families would like their cooking, it soon was ap- parent that the meal was a success as people came back for seconds and in some cases, third helpings. "We were a little unsure whether this would come out okay," said Ms. Lossia. "In a big group like this, you never know if everything will go smoothly. But every- one pitched in." Although she doesn't nor- mally cook and was afraid of cutting her finger, Erin, a junior at North Farmington High School, said she was having a great time helping out. "I came because I think it is an important cause," Erin said. "There needs to be a better relationship between the Chaldean and Jewish communities." "A lot of Chaldeans don't like Jews and a lot of Jews don't like Chaldeans," she said. "We will be role models." Karen Kline, a junior at West Bloomfield High School, said she's learned she can't like or dislike an entire group of people. "I look at the individual per- son, not their religion or background." After serving the meal, the teens talked among them- selves and agreed the event was a success. But next time, they want to have a dance and get their friends to come. "I hope that we will do this again and get more people involved. You can see how much fun we are having," Erin said. ❑ Mr. Mechanic also specializes in major engine repair, computer diagnostics, clutch replacement, front end work, electrical repair and exhaust systems.
