Impact Of War
Is Council Topic
With the Persian Gulf war
still fresh in everyone's
memories, the Jewish Com-
munity Council is taking up
the issue of what now for
Israel and the United
States?
On Thursday, March 21,
beginning at 7:45 p.m. at
Adat Shalom, speaker
Douglas Bloomfield will ad-
dress the Jewish Commun-
ity Council's Community
Assembly on these issues.
Mr. Bloomfield is a former
AIPAC lobbyist and is cur-
rently a political consultant
and columnist for Davar, an
Israeli daily newspaper.
"Mr. Bloomfield will give
us some timely information
on the scenario in Washing-
ton as it concerns Israel,"
Council president Paul D.
Borman said.
"We know there's a lot go-
ing on," Mr. Borman con-
tinued. "We know some-
thing from watching televi-
sion and reading the news-
papers, but we also don't
know how to take these feel-
ings and come up with the
appropriate way to respond
in the halls of the U.S. Con-
gress."
Earlier that day, the
Council will sponsor a lunch
and lecture entitled
"Legacies From the Past .. .
Challenges for the Future,"
beginning 11:30 a.m. in the
McGregor Conference
Center at Wayne State.
Moderators will be Allen
Zemmol, attorney and officer
of the Jewish Community
Council and Melvin Howell,
attorney and civil rights ac-
tivist. Both men were active-
ly involved in the civil rights
movement of the 1960s,
working in Alabama to de-
fend those jailed for register-
ing blacks to vote.
Speaking on "Recounting
Past Alliances" will be Ar-
thur L. Johnson, president of
the Detroit branch of the
NAACP and Leon S. Cohan,
vice president and general
counsel for Detroit Edison.
Dennis W. Archer, former
Michigan Supreme Court
Justice and Hon. Helene
White, 36th District Court
Judge will speak on
"Challenges We Face To-
day."
The program is designed to
highlight two exhibits on
display through March at
the Outer Gallery of the
Community Arts Building at
Wayne, "Blacks and Jews:
The American Experience."
There is a $7.50 admission
at the door for a dairy lunch.
Reservations are required by
calling 962-1880. Ell
