racism and anti-Semitism,
and how blacks and Jews
need each other. A black
leader then gets up and says
basically the same thing.
Forget it, folks. The blacks
don't really care that we're
not close friends anymore,
and neither do the Jews.
Yes, there are a number of
blacks and Jews who do re-
member the past, and who
do see a real need as human
beings to work with one an-
other. But the majority of
Jews and blacks in the
Yuppie-and-under age group
don't have a clue that just 20
years ago Jews and blacks
marched arm in arm in
places like Selma. And in
some of those marches, they
were ridiculed, beaten and
even killed.
But let's be real. How
many of us have good close,
personal black friends? I
mean the kind that you and
your spouse go to the movies
with on Saturday night.
Who invites a black family
over to their home for a
game of bridge or Trivial
Pursuit? And how many
black kids showed up at your
kid's birthday party this
year?

Fine, let's reverse that.
How many blacks invited
you over to their house for a
meal? Probably none. But
would you have gone if you
had received an invitation?
People in Southfield get
angry at this newspaper be-
cause we print a report
showing that some Jews are
considering a move. Jews
move because of "changing"
neighborhoods. The word
changing means that blacks
are moving in, and there's a
fear that blacks will lower
the educational standards of
the local schools and bring a
whole lot of crime into the
areas where they move, not
to mention housing
depreciation.

The age of the civil rights
movement is over, and so
black and Jewish relations
have changed. But I'm
reminded here of a story that
our sages tell us about a
rabbi who thought that by
studying Torah he could
change the world. When he
learned that he couldn't
change the world, he tried to
change the town he was liv-
ing in. And when that didn't
work he learned that the
only way to change anything
was to change himself first.
Nationally, organizations
of blacks and Jews often get
together in a limited sort of
way. Their critics often ac-
cuse them of skirting major
issues that separate the two
groups. And typically, the

same people, all the time,
hold the groups together.
But black and Jewish rela-
tions don't have to be judged
by meetings or public
statements or even art ex-
hibits. Black-Jewish rela-
tions can improve with the
laughter of our children
playing together, with busi-
ness lunches and PTA
meetings.
By learning that we are
people with the same day-to-
day challenges —such as
paying the bills, staying fit,
overcoming medical prob-
lems — we learn that we all
are people with much in
common. Out of informal re-
lationships, we can then talk
about inner-city problems so
identifiable with blacks such
as crime and unemployment
and others. We can then ex-

plain why Israel is so impor-
tant to the Jewish people.
But we can explain to one
another as friends sharing a
pizza instead of black and
Jewish representatives sit-
ting across from one another
at a meeting.
Solutions? Many have
ideas that in the broad spec-
trum seem too small to over-
come the problem. But
thank God the Jews and
blacks of the '60s didn't
think that way.
Locally, support the exis-
tence of Sinai Hospital, es-
pecially its emergency room,
which is a frontline melting
pot for Jews and blacks. This
newspaper has called in the
past for the Jewish Welfare
Federation to move its head-
quarters into Southfield as a
real statement to the tri-
county community.
A national magazine wrote
over a year ago that by the
year 2050, America will be a
country with a majority of
people of color. We talk
about future planning. If for
nothing else, if we don't in-
volve ourselves more with
the African-American com-
munity now, we might pay
for it dearly in the mid-2000s
when we need support for
causes that we hold dear,
like aid for Israel.
But the year 2050 is far
away. Fifteen years ago, we
were close friends. We need-
ed each other then. We still
do. And why shouldn't we be
friends? Our enemies would
love nothing more than to
see us argue and drift fur-
ther apart. ❑
