TO GO OR NOT TO GO
Is NO LONGER THE QUESTION
Recently, 125 American Jewish Committee leaders from 15 cities
returned to the U.S. from a 7-day solidarity mission to Israel.

Why did the AJC organize this trip?
What was the reaction in Israel ?
"There are moments in the life of an institution, just
as in the life of an individual, when important state-
ments of principle must be asserted. At this very fluid
and unpredictable time, AJC's trip to Israel is just such
a statement."
"We all draw courage from your visit to Israel in these
very difficult days."
David A. Harris, AJC Executive Vice President.
An Israeli General
"My family and I have just arrived from the U.S.S.R.
and will commit a lifetime to Israel. I hope that Ameri-
can Jews can commit at least a week."
A new Soviet Jewish immigrant.
With the Gulf crisis and virtually no tourism to
Israel, why did these people go?
"By coming, you tell us you really care; you will not be
intimidated."
"We were concerned about the impact of tensions
and isolation on the Israeli people and wished to
emphasize our solidarity with the people."
What did the participants come back with?
Lawrence Thorpe, Atlanta, Chair, "Operation Unity."
Elaine Wishner, Chapter President, Chicago.

"The bottom line message of this mission is that now
is the time to come to Israel. Now is when we are
needed most. To all Jews, I only ask, come now."
Steven Friedman, Philadelphia.
"Jews everywhere must roll up their sleeves and join
in the effort because Israel belongs to all of us."
Mimi Alperin, Chair, National Executive Council.
Gideon Patt, Israel's Minister of Tourism.
"It was very important to explore the impact of the
Gulf crisis, the U.S.-Israel relationship, the impact of
the intifada, and the outlook for peace."
Sholom Comay, AJC National President, Pittsburgh.
"I came for a very simple reason—the enhancement
of my soul, to be with my Jewish brothers and sisters."
What message do they have for American
Jews?
"My four daughters and I feel emotionally connected
and intellectually stimulated. "
