cornerstone back there."
He describes Schneider as
"a defensive defenseman. He
does a great job in front of our
own net, moving people out of
the way, making sure they're
not screening our goalie. He's
a smart player. He doesn't
make too many mental
mistakes. He does a good job
back there."
Another Jewish player,
senior Brian Kroll, figured to
be the Barons' top center this
year. Kroll opened the season
with three goals in Andover's
first two games, then suffered
a broken leg in the third con-
test, putting him out for the
season.
"He was sorely missed
because he was our number
one center," Farrell said. "I
was hoping that he would
really give us some balance
up front."
Kroll has remained a part
of the team by attending all
the practices and games.
Three younger Jewish
players dress for every game
but do not yet see much ice
time. The group includes a
pair of sophomores, center
Mike Stark and defenseman
John Bielfield, and freshman
forward/defenseman Brian
Epstein, who has a goal and
three assists.
Epstein fits in well with An-
dover's physical style of play,
despite his small size.
"He's fearless," Farrell says.
"He's 5-foot-2, 112 pounds.
But he hits and he's not afraid
to get hit. He takes on people
twice his size — in some
games where you've got kids
who are 230 pounds. And he's
not afraid to go at 'em.
He's going to be a good
player when he's a junior and
senior. He's going to develop.
He's got a lot of speed. He's a
gutty little player. I'm really
high on him."
Epstein has played forward
for most of the year, but Far-
rell sees him as a regular
defenseman in the future
because of his ability and

desire to play a physical
game.
Farrell says his two Jewish
sophomores are working hard
to improve their games. Stark
"knows he's caught up in a
numbers game. We have some
talented people up front. He
can't break the starting
lineup, but he's got a great at-
titude. He continues to work
hard in practice, day-in and
day-out."
Bielfield moved from for-
ward to defense this season.
"He's one of our most-
improved players," Farrell
says. "Next year he might be
a contributor . . . He, too, has
accepted his role; he works
hard."
Andover's success has earn-
ed it strong fan support. A
group of fans traveled with
the team to a weekend tour-
nament in Grand Rapids.
"When we win, people come,"
says Marcus.
Schneider notes a definite
"growth in the fan support
over the year . . . It's a lot
more fun. I really liked it
when we played (Livonia)
Churchill. It seemed like the
whole rink was packed."
Marcus is particularly
pleased with the team's
following among Andover
students. "They come up to
you and ask, 'So, who are you
guys playing this week?' They
know we're a contending
team this year and it makes
everything a lot easier."
With only four seniors on
the roster, and goalie Palmer
returning, Andover figures to
be a state contender again
next year. "With Brian Kroll
being hurt, we're only losing
three contributing seniors,"
the coach says. "I have a cou-
ple kids in the school who are
playing outside the school
who can be contributors next
year . . . With the juniors be-
ing a year older and with
those kids coming in next
year, we should be as good
next year as we are this
year." ❑
