Fifth Annual Tzedaka Fair a planning area for major ac- tivities, civic as well as Jewish. For example, Dora Ehrlich, who made Webster Hall her home after the passing of her husband, Joseph, led in many communal functions there. She inspired Hadassah ac- tivities, had many roles at committee sessions here for the United Hebrew Schools Jewish personalities lived and worked in the building. and the Jewish Welfare Federation Women's Division, and in support of University of Michigan, Hillel and other causes. Rabbi Leon Fram often con- ferred with Temple Israel leaders and others during his residence here. An interesting anecdote is worth recalling. Bill (W.K.) Kelsey, who was the leading Detroit News columnist for two decades with his editorial page commentaries, related to me about a lady fellow- resident in Webster Hall who approached him and said, "Mr. Kelsey, very often I saw you reading the Detroit Jewish Chronicle. Now I see you reading the Michigan Catholic. Mr. Kelsey, are you a Jew or a Catholic?" When Webster Hall became Wayne State University's academic center, there was much learning that was im- parted there by scholars like Prof. Samuel M. Levin who conducted seminars on economics and lectured there. No matter the rubble which Webster-Mackenzie Hall has become. The enriching memories about occurrences and personalities there will always be remembered. ❑ For Fifth Graders, Their Parents and Teachers SUNDAY, March 10 9:30 a.m. - noon at Temple Beth El Telegraph Road at 14 Mile Road Birmingham Special Activities Free Admission Featured Guest: Danny Siegel Internationally Known Mitzvah Mayven NEWS I Co-Sponsored by: ADL Report Says Klan Defanged, Almost Dead New York (JTA) — The Ku Klux Klan has been in decline for a decade and there is little prospect of the hooded order once again becoming a significant force, according to a report issued by the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith. There are about 4,000 members of the different competing factions which together are known as the KKK. During the 1980s, the ADL estimated that Klan membership ranged from a high of 11,500 in 1981 to 4,500 in 1987-88. Several factors caused the decline, including the implication of Klan mem- bers in violent crime across the country; highly publiciz- ed criminal and civil trials in- dicting Klansmen; the pass- age of hate-crimes legislation and anti-paramilitary train- ing statutes in several states. The Klan was also weakened internally with the departure of its most effective leaders: David Duke, Robert Shelton and Bill Wilkinson. Mr. Duke went on to found the National Association for the Advancement of White People, which is "essentially a Klan without robes," ac- cording to Irwin Suall, direc- tor of ADL's Fact Finding Department. Mr. Shelton's sect, United Klans of America, was dealt a fatal blow in 1987 when a $7 million judgment was levied against it. The United Klaus was deemed responsi- ble for a murder committed by its agents. Mr. Wilkinson left the Klan when he was exposed as an informant for the FBI in 1985. Their departure gave way to a period of intense fac- tionalism for the Klan, ac- cording to the ADL report. Another important factor was the climate of the 1980s in which the KKK floundered, unable to mobilize widespread support, Anti-Semitism was more of a factor than ever for the Klan, which is obsessed with the "Jewish question." "Christian Identity, a pseudo-religious doctrine which holds that Aryans are the true Israel and today's Jews are the spawn of Satan, is a widely held belief throughout today's KKK," the report stated. Some Klan leaders are try- in g to convince their followers to pattern pro- paganda on the Duke model, that is, to use code language for their racist ideology, and to avoid being implicated in violent crimes which could lead to the kind of suits which bankrupted the Met- zgers, the Fallbrook, Calif., father and son team that heads the White Aryan Resistance.
