condones . ." Whom are you
citing, Ms. Applebaum? .. .
It hasn't even occurred to
Ms. Applebaum that perhaps
the Halachah concerning
abortion applies to Jewish
women only. Perhaps Jewish
Law addresses itself ex-
clusively to a daughter of
Jacob and not to the
daughters of Esau! If that is
the case, then Ms. Apple-
baum's argument may have
nothing to do with the abor-
tion question, and Rowe vs.
Wade, and the United States
of America! .. .
Let's bear in mind that
when the Mishnah in
Sanhedrin (37a) expresses its
view on the value of human
life, it says, "Whosoever
destroys a single soul of Israel
is accounted by the Halachah
as though he had destroyed
the entire world; and whoever
rescues one Jewish life is
merited with the preservation
of the entire world."
It seems to me that the
Talmud is talking about Jews.
If Ms. Applebaum has a
source which says this
Halachah applies to the
Women of the world, I would
like to know where it is.
Rabbi Jack Goldman

Editor's note: Elizabeth Ap-
plebaum responds that the
Talmud speaks of the seven
Noahide Laws which gentiles
are obligated to observe. The
laws are considered the
minimum necessary for a
civilized society. They include
the prohibition against theft,
adultery and the worship of
false gods.
Addressing the Noahide
Law against murder,
Maimonides says that any
gentile who `slays a human
being, even a fetus in its
mother's womb, must be ex-
ecuted."
Inequitable Funding
Of The Day Schools
I was flabbergasted to read
the Feb. 22 article regarding
Yavneh, Detroit's Reform day
school, which, after three
years of operation has only
managed to recruit 14 (count
'em!) students!
What amazed me the most,
however, is the incredible
amount of money that is be-
ing poured into this place! As
stated in your article, the
Jewish Welfare Federation
has given Yavneh $140,000
over the last three years —
that's an investment of over
$10,000 per student (since the
school has until now had even
less than 14 students)!
I cannot even begin to
fathom what, for instance, the
Yeshivah Beth Yehuda could
do with that kind of per
capita student investment.
With over 600 students, that
would entail a comparable
Federation grant of over $6
million for three years; as it
is, the latest annual Federa-
tion grant to YBY was
$230,000.
To draw an even more dra-
matic comparison, Yeshivah
Darchei Torah, another
"new," albeit Orthodox, day
school, which began only four
years ago, now has an enroll-
ment of not 14, but 92
students. And how much has
Federation granted Darchei
Torah? Zero! Where is the
equity? .. .

Purim Spoof
Was Damaging
As Jews, it is our respon-
sibility to promote and defend
a respectful identity to the
gentile world. The Detroit
Jewish News, the represen-
tative voice of the Detroit
Jewish community, has
betrayed us. It has miserably
failed in fulfilling this
responsibility.
The "JUSA TODAY" sec-
tion of Mar. 1 recreated and
reinforced the deadly
stereotypes that Jews are
fighting to erase.
The thematic attitude of
"JUSA TODAY" was an
abrasive ethnic arrogance
that easily illicits -jealousy
and hatred among our gentile
neighbors towards the Jewish
community.
Unfortunately, the humor-
ous spirit of the Purim spoof
was lost in its embarrassing
content. Is it funny to mock
the wealth of Franklin Hills,
an exclusive Jewish country
club? Is it funny to satirize
Nelson Mandela and Mal-
colm X, symbols of African-
American freedom and
equality? Is it funny to indict
all Palestinian women with
terrorist activity? The answer
is no. The "JUSA TODAY"
section illustrates an in-
tolerable image that The
Detroit Jewish News attaches
to the Jewish community of
Detroit.
The Detroit Jewish News is
in a position to explore and
publicize the achievements,
problems, potentialities and
the religious tradition which
this great Jewish community
bears. Yet, the "JUSA TO-
DAY" section that appeared
in our Jewish newspaper,
could just have easily been
found in a dangerous anti-
Semitic publication.
We have enough enemies
digging our graves.
