Student Feud On In Britain London (JTA) — Jewish students at Leeds University in northern England were forced by the student union to removed a poster pro- claiming Jerusalem "the eternal capital of Israel." The constraint was impos- ed after Palestinians on campus complained that East Jerusalem should not be designated part of Israel. The poster had been mounted at an exhibition on Jewish Cultural Week. The episode took place within the context of a con- tinuing campus bout bet- ween Jewish and Palestin- ian students. The intensity of the antagonism increased during the Persian Gulf war. However, in the ongoing battle, the Jewish students also scored many points. The injunction to remove the poster followed a win by the Jewish students when the Palestine solidarity cam- paign was told to remove lit- erature from an exhibition it had mounted urging a boycott of Israeli goods. The Jewish students re- cently also deflected an at- tempt to affiliate the student union with Medical Aid for Palestine and to name a room at the union building in honor of a Palestinian killed in the intifada. The student union instead adopted a proposal offered by the Jewish students to af- filiate with B'Tselem, an Israeli human rights organ- ization often critical of Israeli policies in the ad- ministered territories. The recent clashes took place against a tradition that this university in Yorkshire has for years been one of the largest centers of Jewish student activism in Britain. And, despite passions aroused by the Gulf war, an- ti-Zionist activity on the Leeds campus has been less extreme than it was a decade ago. But elsewhere in Britain, extreme left-wing groups continued to try to under- mine Israel. At City University in Lon- don last month, the Socialist Student Workers Party tried to get the student union to endorse a "secular dem- ocratic state" in "Palestine," which would in effect mean the destruction of Israel. A counterproposal by the Jewish society had already been defeated. But before a vote could be taken, the fire alarm sounded. Night after night, Israel's people withstood the deadly rain of missiles. Day after day, Soviet Jews arrived by the thousands to begin life anew. The time has come to rebuild. Join your community and your people... Direct from Israel: Tel Aviv: Arise and Sing!
