"It is probably a good thing to do," said Rep. Max- ine Berman, D-Southfield, recently named to the House appropriations committee. is not quite as simple as saying, 'We have Jewish legislators there who will look out for us.' We will. The lobbyist is not going to be hired to swing votes. "We really need someone in Lansing without the bag- gage that legislators carry," Ms. Berman said. "This per- son can work with both par- ties." Ms. Berman and others pointed to Noble Kheder, who heads a lobbying firm in Lansing. Jewish leaders said Mr. Kheder was largely responsible for helping the Jewish Home For Aged ob- tain a long-awaited cer- tificate of need that will allow Borman Hall in Detroit and Prentis Manor in Southfield to move to a facility in West Bloomfield. "The certificate of need process for the Jewish Home For Aged would not have moved as it did without the help of Mr. Kheder," Mr. Schlussel said. "The com- munity needs to express itself like this on an ongoing basis." Although most of the community's six-member Jewish legislative team- were supportive of hiring a lobbyist, Sen. Jack Faxon, D- Farmington Hills, called such plans "reprehensible." "I don't know why every- body thinks after an election there is a need to hire an intermediary to do what they just elected me to do," 4 "I don't know why everybody thinks after an election there is a need to hire an intermediary to do what they just elected me to do." Sen. Jack Faxon said Mr. Faxon. "Obviously, people like having a lobbyist. Then they don't have to make calls them- selves. "It is like offering me a frozen dinner as opposed to -making a home-cooked meal," Mr. Faxon said. "I'd prefer the home-cooked meal." Mr. Schlussel said he and other representatives of the Jewish community still plan to maintain personal con- tacts with legislators. ❑ 1 'Family Land' Program Set For Families Jewish Experiences for Families will host "Family Land," a program high- lighting Jewish community resources that strengthen and support Jewish families through hands-on activities.
