Calif. Dems
Back Talks

Los Angeles (JTA) — In
the first political grassroots
signal on the Middle East
since the end of the fighting
in the Persian Gulf, dele-
gates to the California State
Democratic Party conven-
tion in Oakland overwhelm-
ingly endorsed direct
negotiations among the re-
gion's conflicting players as
the best chance for peace in
the Middle East.
In a resolution introduced
by some 400 delegates
belonging to Democrats for
Israel, the convention called
on the U.S. government "to
work toward direct, party-to-
party bilateral talks to
achieve a peaceful solution
to Arab-Arab, Arab-Israel
and Palestinian-Israel con-
flicts."
An opposing resolution,
backed by Arab-American
groups and their supporters,
was handily defeated. It
called for an international
peace conference under U.N.
auspices and for "national
self-determination" for all
peoples of the region, a clear
allusion to the Palestinians.
Noting the growing in-
fluence of California as the
most politically potent state
in the country, pro-Israel
forces hailed passage of the
resolution as a harbinger of
the likely national Dem-
ocratic platform on the Mid-
dle East.

Schwarzkopfs
Bombed Out

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
Schwarzkopf residence in
Israel was severely damaged
by a Scud missile, and the
family is temporarily being
housed in a local hotel.
But it was not the by now
world-famous Gen. H. Nor-
man Schwarzkopf, com-
mander of the coalition
forces in the Persian Gulf,
who was bombed out.
Meir and Hannah Schwar-
zkopf, of the Orthodox
township of Bnei Brak near
Tel Aviv, had been spending
a four-day break in Eilat to
rest from the missile attacks
on the Greater Tel Aviv
area, when they were in-
formed by neighbors, by
phone, that their apartment
had been hit.
Meir Schwarzkopf arrived
in Israel in 1944 from
Poland, where his entire
family had been wiped out
by the Nazis.
"As far as I know, we are
not related in any manner .
But I would feel honored if
we were," he said.
