I FINE ARTS

Wood Sculptor
At Center Galleries

The Center Galleries will
host the opening of "Leonard
Cave: Sculptor in Wood," an
exhibition that acknowledges
a correlation between wood —
the sculptor's material of
choice — and the artist's own
sculptural process.
Mr. Cave's work reveals a
sculptural language that is
quick, expressive, and im-
mediate. He credits wood's
responsiveness and the role
that the natural qualities of
wood play in his aesthetic
decision-making process.
Wood's natural beauty, tex-
ture, imperfect nature, its
changes in color, its warping,
twisting and cracking, are all
compositional features that
characterize this artist's
style.
The opening reception to
meet the artist will take place
4:30-7 p.m., Mar. 8. "Leonard
Cave: Sculptor in Wood" will
be on view in the Center
Galleries Mar. 8-Apr. 19. Mr.
Cave will present a slide lec-
ture discussion of his
sculpture, 1:30 p.m. Mar. 21,
at the Center for Creative
Studies Institute of Music
and Dance Auditorium, John
R at Kirby. An informal talk
about his sculpture will
follow.
The Center Galleries are
located at Woodward Avenue
and Kirby Street in the Park
Shelton Building. Exhibitions
are open to the public and ad-
mission is free. Gallery hours
are: Tues.-Fri. 10 a.m.-5 p.m.,
Sat. and Sun. 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Paid parking is available in-
side the Park Shelton and
free parking is available in
the Center for Creative
Studies parking lots.

Art Furniture
At Sybaris

The Sybaris Gallery, Royal
Oak, will present a solo ex-
hibition of art furniture by
Andrew Kaliniak Mar. 1-Apr.
6.
Mr. Kaliniak's style of work
is quite divergent. Aesthetic
influences range from the
Cranbrook style to neoclass-
icism to Memphis.
A meticulous craftsman,
Mr. Kaliniak mixes woods
with contrasting materials
such as aluminum, copper,
granite and plastic laminates
to create genuinely in-
novative pieces of furniture.
In contrast to many of today's
young furniture makers who
demote function, Mr.
Kaliniak believes in balanc-
ing aesthetics with utility
and his work is extremely
successful as a result.

Andrew Kaliniak's show
opens at the Sybaris Gallery
with a reception 6-9 p.m. on
Mar. 1. The artist will exhibit
a wide range of furniture such
as a liquor cabinet, a hall
table, several chairs, a couple
of benches, a dining table and
some small occasional tables.

Park West
Rembrandt Show

Park West Gallery,
Southfield, will hold an ex-
hibition and sale of 50
original etchings by Rem-
brandt Van Rijn.
The collection is comprised
of a broad range of etchings:
self portraits, Old and New
Testament, historical, beg-
gars, landscapes and contem-
porary portraits.
This exhibition is the result
of nearly three years of a
world-wide search to find
outstanding etchings of Rem-
brandt. The collection offers a
look at many of his best-
known and best-loved works.
The catalog will include
commentaries on the work by
Rembrandt scholar, David R.
Smith of the University of
New Hampshire.
The exhibition and sale will
be open to the public Monday
through Wednesday from 10
a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday and
Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
and Saturday and Sunday
from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Park
West Gallery is located at
29469 Northwestern High-
way just north of 12 Mile
Road in Southfield. For infor-
mation, call 354-2343.
