That's because so many of them use it irresponsibly. Like to fill up on high-fat, high- cholesterol foods. Foods that can load the blood with cholesterol, which can build up plaque in their arteries, increasing their risk of heart attacks and threaten- ing their lives. So next time you pick up a fork, remem- ber to handle it as you would any other weapon. For self-defense, not self-destruction. IN ROBIN'S NEST SHOPPING CENTER West Bloomfield 68 737-0160 FRIDAY, MARCH 1, 1991 354-5959 Artist Creates Symbolic Menorah CARLA JEAN SCHWARTZ raised funds for the Mich- igan Heart Association. Local Columnist H untington Woods ar- tist Morris Brose recently had a mechanical problem with his newest sculpture. His 10-foot wide by 5-foot high menorah he created for Temple Beth El in the Santa Cruz, Calif., suburb of Aptos couldn't fit down the steps. Since Mr. Brose's freight elevator wasn't working, he had to remove the menorah with a hoist. The menorah posed a complicated mechanical task, but the ideology is quite clear. "My principal aim in making this menorah was to create a sense of high spirituality of ancient Heb- rew liturgy. The forms that comprise the sculpture are based upon traditional Heb- rew ideas, symbols and calligraphy," Mr. Brose said. At the center of the meno- rah is the letter shin, flank- ed by the tablets. The light carriers are inspired by an- cient oil lamps. Two sym- bolic shofars are on the sides of the menorah. The metals of the menorah are bronze, copper and nickel silver. HILLEL WINNERS Three students from Hillel Day School have been nam- ed local winners in the 22nd annual America & Me essay contest, sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance. The three students who earned first, second and third place are respectively: Elly Berger, Jeremy Gor- don and David Laxner. Elly's first place essay now advances to the state level competition. In the fitness arena, Ceil Ginger , a Hillel gym teacher, organiz- ed the blood drive and Hillel jump rope event. Over 500 people attended the Feb. 10 event and 100 pints of blood were donated. The children and parents jumped rope and HARVITH PARTY Sylvia and Erwin Har- vith recently hosted a garden party at their Pom- pano Beach home in Florida to celebrate Tu B'Shevat. Max Sosin served as master of ceremonies, while Ed- Sylvia and Erwin Harvith. ward Rosenthal , Michigan regional director of the Jew- ish National Fund, was the guest speaker. Laurie Nosanchuk, assistant ex- ecutive director of Michigan JNF, also attended. Gardens of at least 100 trees to be planted in Israel were purchased by many Detroiters. Some of the patrons included: Dr. and Mrs. Arnold Axelrod, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Baron, Mr. and Mrs. Al Deutsch, Beatrice Epel, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Frankel, the Gantz family, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dorfman and Pearl Brodsky. In addition to a garden of trees, the Harviths are es- tablishing five Keren Dorot, a JNF contribution, in honor of their grandchildren.
