permitted to enter the Pro-
mised Land. Aaron died at
the age of 123. He was a
leader who had stood by
Moses' side. The period of na-
tional mourning at Aaron's
death was the same as that
for Moses. Throughout
biblical literature, the name
of Aaron remains unique. He
was the loyal lieutenant of
Moses. Aaron was consecrated
as high priest, thus becoming
the ancestor of all future
priests of Israel. Aaron emerg-
ed from biblical references as
a distinct personality.
Aaron was especially adept
at peacemaking, settling
quarrels by telling each side
that the other was ready for
peace. Whereas Moses was
looked upon as the embodi-
ment of justice and truth,
Aaron was made to represent
mercy and peace. Hillel set
him up as an example of the
highest type of virtue in his
well-known saying, "Be ye of
the disciples of Aaron loving
peace and pursuing peace,
loving one's fellow creature
and bringing them near to
the law." 0
