COMMUNITY Danny Siegel To Be At The Tzedakah Fair Danny Siegel will speak at the annual Tzedekah Fair, 9:15-11:45 a.m. Mar. 10, at Temple Beth EL All Jewish fifth-graders, their parents and teachers are invited. The program is co-sponsored by the Jewish Welfare Federa- tion Women's Division, Jewish Experiences for Families (J.E.F.F.) and Temple Beth El. The mitzvah forum, which will open with the modern- day maggid (storyteller), is an opportunity for participants to visit "the World of Our Jewish Community," where they will learn about services provided by local agencies and organizations. Mr. Siegel has sought out and helped fund small, grass- roots projects and individuals in Israel and the U.S. whose work personifies the meaning of tzedakah. For this purpose, he has organized the Ziv Tzedakah Fund, a non-profit corporation, which has given Danny Siegel out more than $500,000. Participants are asked to bring a tzedakah gift for any of the participating organiza- tions and a donation of kosher food for Yad Ezra, the com- munity food bank. JPI Sets Purim Plans JPI members and students will celebrate Purim with Purimspiels and other enter- tainment, hamantaschen, and a carnival 10:15 a.m. Mar. 3 at the Maple-Drake Jewish Community Center. The celebration will begin with holiday related perfor- mances by students and parents in Room 333. It will continue in Shiffman Hall with a carnival run by JPI students and members. Following JPI's celebration, JPI b'nai mitzvah students and teen assistants will aid in running the JCC's Purim Carnival. Kadima Program Holds Elections Kadima: Jewish Support Services for Adults with Men- tal Illness, recently installed its new officers and board. Officers: Dean J. Family-To-Family Needs Volunteers Family-to-Family is seeking local residents to participate in its program of helping new Americans adjust to life in this country. Headed by Rosie Schlussel and Ellie Slovis, Family-to- Family is a project of the Women's Division of Jewish Welfare Federation and Na- tional Council of Jewish Women. It aims to bring together local families and Families are needed to befriend the emigres. There is no financial commitment. newcomers from the Soviet Union for friendship and enriching Jewish and cultural experiences. A special appeal is being made to the community to join in time to include new Americans at family sedarim. For many of the newcomers who were unable to practice Judaism in the Soviet Union, it may be their first Passover experience. Families who wish to par- ticipate are asked to make a one-year commitment. Prior to being matched, one family member must attend an orientation session. Sessions are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Mar. 11 in the library of the Sigmund and Sophie Rohlik Wing of the United Hebrew Schools and 7:30 p.m. Mar. 19 in the library of the Maple-Drake Jewish Community Center. Whenever possible, matches are made by profession, in- terests and children's ages. To date, 250 local families have been matched with new American families. Art Of Ohm To Be Exhibited "Olim 90," an art exhibit of the works of Soviet Jewish olim who settled in Israel in 1990, will be on display at the Maple-Drake Jewish Com- munity Center Mar. 4-18. A champagne-reception is set for 7:30 p.m. Mar. 9. The exhibit is sponsored by the Zionist Organization of America. A committee of patrons chaired by Judge Avern Cohn will greet the guests at the reception. ZOA's national president, Sidney Silverman, will be the guest of honor. Jewish Federation Names Budget Chairs The Jewish Welfare Federa- tion appointed chairmen of five budget and planning divisions. The divisions are reviewing requests for funding from member and beneficiary agencies and will make recommendations to Federa- tion's executive committee and board of governors. Jerome Schostak is the new chairman of the Capital Needs Division, which handles proposals for maintenance and construc- tion of Jewish community facilities. Dr. Darryl Goldberg will continue as chairman of the National Agencies Division, which works with national beneficiaries of Federation. Benjamin Rosenthal, past associate chairman of the Community Services Divi- sion, is the new chairman. Ellen Labes and Harvey. Kleiman are the newly ap- pointed associate chairmen of this division, which works with local human services agencies. The new chairman of the Culture and Group Services Division is Norman Katz. Ronald Riback and Terran Leemis are associate chairmen. Irwin Alterman is the chairman of the newly form- ed Jewish Education Divi- sion. He served as associate chairman of the Culture and Education Division. Richard Krugel and Claude Schochet are associate chairmen. The Culture/Group Services and Jewish Education divi- sions were created from the former Culture and Educa- tion Division. Meeting For Parents Of Kids With Disabilities The Detroit chapter of Keshet, an organization of Jewish parents with han- dicapped children, will hold its opening meeting 7:30 p.m. Mar. 6, in the Agency for Jewish Education (United Hebrew Schools). The meeting will introduce the Keshet program to the Detroit area. Plans for future meetings and programs will be discussed. The speaker will be Sara Bland, executive director of the Chicago-based Keshet organization. Keshet is based on the be- lief that every Jewish child should be able to participate as fully as possible in the mainstream of Jewish life, regardless of disability. Par- ticipation is open to Jewish families of all denominations whose children have any type of handicap. Israeli Consul To Speak On War Israel's consul general for Toronto and Western Canada will speak at the Windsor Jewish Community Centre 7:30 p.m. March 5. Consul General Benjamin Abileah will discuss "The Iraq War: Implications for the State of Israel." Mr. Abileah is a sabra and a career diplomat.
