PROJECT SHERUT
The Hebrew word sherut means service. Project Sherut provides
in-kind goods and services to community service organizations.
Each week, we will publish requests for needed items.
Persons interested in helping to meet these needs should
contact Miriam Imerman at The Jewish Community Council at
962-1880. Also, organizations or groups in need of in-kind
services should contact The Jewish Community Council.
CLOTHING. Orchards Chil-
dren's Services is a child
welfare agency serving over
500 children in their own
homes and in foster homes.
Orchards has a "Children's
Clothing Corner" which
utilizes good used clothing, as
well as donations of new cloth-
ing to its children. Services
needs clothing in good repair
in size infant through teen —
particularly needed are coats,
sweaters, boots and new
underwear.

TOYS, GIFTS, ETC. Children's
Leukemia Foundation of Michi-
gan serves patients and
families within the state of
Michigan. The mission of the
organization is to help adults
and children throughout Mich-
igan cope with the effects of
leukemia and related disorders
through research, service and
education. Children's Leu-
kemia disorders through
research, service and educa-
tion. Children's Leukemia
Foundation needs office equip-
ment, furniture, supplies, new
toys for hospital visitations, and
gifts, certificates or tapes for
patients.

Citizens For Better Care pro-
vides long-term advocacy ser-
vices to persons residing in
long-term care facilities. Ad-
vocacy includes educating
residents about their rights,
assisting them in resolving
complaints and being a
presence for those who are
unable to speak for them-
selves. CBC also addresses
issues affecting long-term care
residents through legislation
and public awareness.

The Family to Family program, a joint project of the National
Council of Jewish Women and Women's Division of the Jewish
Welfare Federation, has been successful in connecting many
families in the Detroit area with Soviet Jewish newcomers. We

The Cultural Arts Division
raises awareness of the arts
through research, education,
advocacy and communication.
Southfield invests in the arts to
develop an affiliation with
amateur and professional ar-
tistic groups, giving students
the opportunity to realize their
creative potential. This is ac-
complished in part through
building ties with arts organiza-
tions and by introducing new
art forms and providing new
expressions of talent.
Volunteers are needed to
assist with clerical functions,
help in public relations ac-
tivities, and in managing pro-
grams. Help is also needed in
uniting organizations in the
renovation of B'nai David as a
performing arts center.
Skills needed: General of-
fice skills for office duties;
news release writing for PR
functions.

Heartline

This is a short-term residen-
tial program for women with
emotional and/or behavioral
problems. Heartline's purpose
is to provide these women with
food and shelter, and oppor-
tunities to develop marketable
job skills through education,
job training and our self-help
Phase Program.
Volunteers are needed to
tutor slow learners; crafts in-
structors are needed to teach
crocheting, knitting, painting,
sewing, etc.; recreation as-
sistants to supervise recrea-
tional activities; gardening en-
thusiasts to help residents
develop an interest in flower
and vegetable gardening;
music instructors for piano and
organ lessons, and a fashion
assistant to help residents
develop a sense of style and
to learn how to shop
economically.
Skills needed: Patience and
empathy in working with
women with problems.
Estimated time commitment:
4 to 8 hours per week.

CHHC's volunteer program,
Special Support Volunteers,
works with patients and their
families in the tri-county area.
The volunteers provide respite
care for the terminally ill, as
well as chronically ill patients.
Volunteers are needed to
provide respite care, and are
required to complete a free,
10-week training course deal-
ing with death and dying,
listening skills, and hands-on
care for patients.
Estimated time commitment:
4 hours per week after the
training course.

Since Israel was founded in 1948, American Jews have been at the ready, going to Israel at times of need as human
service volunteers. We went during the '67 war. We went during the Yom Kippur war. Now, Israel needs us again.
