Soviet Jewish
Newspaper
Debuts

Vestnik, the nation's first
semi-monthly Russian lang-
uage newspaper for Soviet
emigres, recently began
publishing in Owings Mills.
Its goal, says an editorial in
its first issue, is "to preserve
and promote Russian culture
outside the Soviet Union, to
strengthen the existing ties
between the English- and
Russian-speaking com-
munities and to build new
bri'd'As of understanding
between them."
The paper has a current
press run of 3,000 and is
distributed only in the
Baltimore area. The paper's
publisher, Val Price, plans
to distribute Vestnik soon in
such cities as Boston,
Philadelphia, New York,
Detroit, and Toronto.
Other Soviet Jewish
magazines or newspapers
published in the United
States, said Mr. Price, are
either "serious literary
magazines or like National
Enquirer. We are more polit-
ical."
Editor-in-chief Victor R.
Blok said Vestnik is "on the
side of the democrats in
Russia, such as Boris
Yeltsin, and very skeptical
of Gorbachev."
Recent issues have includ-
ed an interview with Nathan
Scharansky; a critique by
syndicated columnist Jean
Kirkpatrick of America's
anti-Iraq alliance with
Syria, and an attack on the
American educational
system.

Israel Censors
Reporters'
Telephones

Although Iraqi "minders"
are at the elbows of every
foreign correspondent in
Baghdad and military cen-
sors check every syllable fil-
ed by reporters in the Gulf
theater, most readers are not
aware of how Israel checks
war-related dispatches from
journalists based within its
borders.
Buried at the bottom of a
recent report by Joel
Brinkley, the New York
Times correspondent in
Jerusalem, was this eye-
opener: "The (Israeli) censor's
office confirmed earlier this
week that it had begun
monitoring the home
telephones of foreign cor-
respondents based here, occa-
sionally interrupting conver-
sations to warn that the
discussions had touched on
censorable areas." ❑
