Detroiter Set
For Iditarod
Jim Cantor: 1,162-mile mush.
STAFF REPORT
I
f Michigan's changing
winter has you down, just
brighten up for the next
week by thinking about
former Detroiter Jim Can-
tor.
The Anchorage resident
took an extended leave from
his law practice to train for
the 1,162-mile Iditarod dog
sled race. It starts this
weekend. Mr. Cantor has
spent the last few months
shoveling out the dog yard
(five garbage cans of dropp-
ings per week), loading the
dogs onto his truck, driving
to a practice track,
unloading and hooking up
the dogs to a sled, running
20 miles with the team,
unhooking and returning
home for lunch about 4 p.m.
He then repeats the pro-
cess, completing the second
run and returning home by
midnight.
Mr. Cantor, the son of
Bernard and Judy Cantor of
Birmingham, is competing
in his first Iditarod, from
Anchorage to Nome. His
wife, Susan, a native of New
Jersey, helps with the dogs
and will lead his support
team during the three-week
race.
The two met at the Uni-
versity of Michigan and
spent time in Alaska in
1981. They became inter-
ested in dog sledding —
"mushing" to the natives —
while spending Thanksgiv-
ing with friends.
He qualified for the big
race by completing a 200-
mile-round-trip race bet-
ween Knik Bar and Skwent-
na.
The Knik 200 "was a real
experience," Mr. Cantor
said, "especially when it was
3 a.m. and 30 below." He
once fell asleep on the sled,
and totaled 70 minutes of
sleep during the 36-hour
race. El
