"The Middle East discrimination factor is religion. Arab nations are afraid that their masses will change if they don't act col- lectively." All three speakers ad- dressed the subject of hatred, stating that prejudice in the Middle East must not filter into the United States. "It is good to see boys and girls from all races here to- day," Sheldon Lutz said. "What is America all about? It is open and free. My parents were from Lithuania, Mr. Michlin's parents were from Russia and Mr. Mackay was born in Iraq. "The three of us are friends," Mr. Lutz said. ❑ Applebaum Wins Story Contest Elizabeth Applebaum, assistant editor of The Jew- ish News, has won second prize in the 1991 Raymond Carver Short Story Contest.
