O.K. Harris
Sets Exhibit
Aris Koutroulis, master
printer, paper maker, painter,
teacher, and the man who
revived the 19th century
cliche-verre photographic/
graphic technique, will open
an exhibition March 2 at
O.K. Harris Works of Art
Gallery, 430 N. Wdodward,
Birmingham.
According to Mr. Koutrou-
lis, who divides his time be-
tween teaching duties in
Detroit and his New York
City studio, this exhibition
will be a "combination of
original Cranbrook work and
current work — some of the
best work I've ever done."
In celebration of the exhibi-
tion, David Klein, director of
O.K. Harris, will publish a
series of six etchings in an
edition of 20 which will be Mr.
Koutroulis' first etchings. Mr.
Klein will also publish a
catalogue for the exhibition.
During the '80s, Mr.
Koutroulis exhibited fre-
quently at Ivan Karp's O.K.
Harris Works of Art in New
York City. This exhibition
marks his first show with Mr.
Klein's gallery in Birm-
ingham, an affiliate of the
Soho space. The work will be
on view through Mar. 23.
Mr. Koutroulis, born in
Athens, Greece, 1938, surviv-
ed the German occupation of
Greece. His odyssey led him to
Detroit via New Orleans, the
Tamarind Lithography
Workshop in Los Angeles and
the Cranbrook Academy of
Art, Bloomfield Hills. His ap-
pointment to the Wayne State
University art department
faculty in 1966 began a long
teaching career in Detroit. He
currently serves as director
for fine arts at the Center for
Creative Studies.

Art Association
Hosts Show
The Birmingham Bloom-
field Art Association will host
a student show Mar. 2-23. The
opening reception will be 2-4
p.m. Mar. 2; the awards
ceremony is at 3 p.m. Refresh-
ments will be served.
As an annual juried exhibi-
tion, with more than $1,000
in prizes for adult students of
the BBAA, this show reflects
class experience, and will
showcase a variety of media
including painting, weaving,
jewelry, glass and pottery.
The juror is Louise Nobili,
who is associated with Wayne
State University and Nor-
thwestern University.
The non-juried youth stu-
dent show will be displayed in
DeSalle Gallery of the BBAA.
Local Artist
On Display
An art exhibit featuring the
abstract watercolors of
Shirley Hathaway will be on
display through Mar. 1 at the
Civic Center Gallery, 26000
Evergreen Road. Hours for
the exhibit are 9 a.m.-9 p.m.
Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
on Saturdays.
Ms. Hathaway was
educated at Wayne State
University. Her goal is to get
texture and color to respond
to the senses as opposed to
painting things as they are.
Ms. Hathaway has won
several awards, and her pain-
tings are in private and
public collections in this
country and abroad. Locally
her work is in the Michigan
National Bank, NBD and
Standard Federal Savings
and Loan.
