George Bush:
Zionist Hero

n Israel, the radio keeps
playing a hit song called
"Sugar Bush, I Love You
So." This 1950s standard
had been forgotten until disc
jockeys in Tel Aviv dredged
it up to serve as a statement
of Israel's new love for
George Bush.
It's not surprising that
George Bush is the man of
the hour in Israel these days.
He is leading a massive
multinational effort to
destroy Israel's number one
enemy, Iraq. Already,
U.S.-led forces have dra-
matically reduced Saddam
Hussein's ability to wage
chemical, biological, and
nuclear warfare against the
Jewish State. It seems likely
that under George Bush,
Saddam Hussein's military
threat to Israel — and
hopefully Saddam himself—
will be totally eliminated.
And then there are the
Patriot anti-missile systems
that Mr. Bush rushed to
Israel when Saddam's Scuds
started landing in Tel Aviv.
And not just the Patriots,
but also the American crews
to operate them. The other
day the American crews
were treated to a party at
Kibbutz Degania where they
were showered with the love
and gratitude of people who
see them as saviors. The
television footage made
clear that the Americans
loved the enthusiastic affec-
tion of the kibbutzniks. As
one told a CBS reporter, this
"sure beats Saudi Arabia."
Another said that he had
never experienced anything
in his entire life like the
Israeli outpouring of sup-
port.
This love affair between
Israel and the United States,
as well as the one between
Israelis and President Bush,
provides a pleasant diver-
sion during a terrible time.
As Americans, it's painful
for Jews here — as it is for
our non-Jewish neighbors —
to deal with the loss of young
Americans in the desert
sands. And as Jews, we are
reeling with the image of Tel
Aviv under missile attack.
Once again it is possible to
imagine the destruction of
the Jewish state and with it
the end of Jewish life — a
fear that had almost vanish-

George Bush:
New respect?
ed but now haunts us again.
The U.S. embrace of Israel,
as ephemeral as it may be, is
welcome indeed. Slightly
harder to deal with is the
emergence of George Bush
as a heroic figure.
Few of us voted for him in
the 1988 election. Jewish
Republicans, voting in the
primaries, preferred Jack
Kemp and even, of all peo-
ple, Bob Dole. In the
November election, Jews
voted for Michael Dukakis
by a 3-1 margin. The only
comfort in Mr. Bush's elec-
tion was that his Vice-
President, Dan Quayle, had
been a strong supporter of
Israel since his days in the
House and Senate. But that
was small consolation. Bet-
ween Mr. Bush and Secre-
tary of State James Baker, a
Texas oilman, it was unlike-
ly that Mr. Quayle's pro-
Israel stance would carry the
day.
It didn't. From Inaugura-
tion Day, right down
through the day Iraq invad-
ed Kuwait, the Bush Ad-
ministration has been un-
friendly to Israel. Prime
Minister Shamir was treated
as persona non grata, the
one foreign leader whom
George Bush never phoned.
Israel was blamed by Secre-
tary Baker for the collapse of
Middle East peace hopes.
Mr. Bush became obsessed
with the settling of Soviet
Jews in Jerusalem, stating
that the Administration
considered Jerusalem oc-
cupied territory. As far as
Israel went, George Bush
was no Ronald Reagan but
rather another Jimmy
Carter or Dwight
Eisenhower.
But now he is out there
pulverizing Israel's worst
enemy. It is true that he is
not doing it for Israel. It is
also true that his rhetoric
about Israel is absent of any
affection. His State of the
Union message ignored
