"The black community is
faced with a lot of difficult
problems in the days ahead.
There is a whole major
rebuilding process that must
start with rebuilding the
leadership of the community;'
explained Mr. Peterson.
He said the Washtenaw
County coalition can play an
important part in the local
restructuring process. As the
relationship between the
communities develops, he
hopes that Jews will make a
larger commitment of finan-
cial and professional invest-
ment in the black community.
Jesse Gordon, organizer of
the rehab project and one of
the charter members of the
coalition, said he would like
to see more referrals between
local black and Jewish firms.
Mr. Peterson and three
other black members of the
coalition were planning a trip
to Israel in the spring, but
due to the Persian Gulf war,
the trip has been postponed.
In Israel, Mr. Peterson had
hoped to study social and
governmental issues, to gain
a better understanding of the
social and political agendas of
the Jewish state.
Mr. Peterson felt that since
"my religion is based out of
Israel:" the trip would also
put him in touch with his
roots.
Mr. Peterson hopes the
coalition will begin a newslet-
ter that will be distributed to
Jews and blacks throughout
Washtenaw County. "Once
people begin to see more and
more communication, others
will pick up on it and want to
get involved," he said.
A trip to the Holocaust
Memorial Center in West
Bloomfield is being planned
for members of the black
community.
The group's next structured
event will take place the week
before Passover when the
Black-Jewish Coalition will
host a "freedom seder."
The Detroit area formed an
alliance between the black
and Jewish communities
three years ago. Beverly
Geltner, president of the
Detroit Chapter of the
American Jewish Committee,
said the group is 50-members
strong, and growing.
Several Detroit-area Reform
temples have on-going rela-
tionships and annual events
with black churches.
During last month's Martin
Luther King Day event at the
Ann Arbor JCC, Mr. Geltner
spoke about the partnership
between blacks and Jews. She
said the two communities
need to build on the past,
shared values and a shared
commitment to confront
racism and anti-Semitism. ❑
