Iraqi Scud
Strikes Israel

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Another
Iraqi Scud missile was fired
into Israel last week,
causing neither injuries nor
damage, an Israel Defense
Force spokesman announc-
ed.
The IDF would not disclose
the exact impact area. But it
apparently landed in Zone 5,
the civil defense's designa-
tion for the central region.
The area extends from
Hadera and Beit She'an in
the north to Ashkelon and
Ein Gedi in the south, and
includes the Samaria region
of the West Bank, but not
the Greater Tel Aviv and
Jerusalem areas.
The attack was the 15th on
Israel since the Persian Gulf
war began on Jan. 17, and
the missile was the 36th
Scud to strike Israeli ter-
ritory.
Like all previous missiles,
it carried a conventional,
high- explosive warhead.
The IDF announced that it
had found the impact site of
a missile Baghdad said was
fired at Israel's nuclear
facility at Dimona in the
Negev.
After a search of more
than 48 hours, the debris
was discovered in a remote,
desolate area, far from habi-
tation and nowhere near the
declared target, the IDF
said.

Quayle Offsets
Growing Rift

Miami — Vice President
Dan Quayle headed off a
growing rift with the Israeli
government by telling Jew-
ish leaders here that $400
million in long-delayed
housing loan guarantees
would be released to Israel
"later this week."
He characterized the prob-
lems holding up the release
of the loan guarantees as
"technical," adding that
"there is no substantive
dispute" between the Bush
administration and the
Israeli government.
One Israeli diplomat at-
tending the annual plenum
here of the National Jewish
Community Relations Ad-
visory Council, where Mr.
Quayle made his remarks,
said, "We are glad it's over."
The guarantees which
will be used to finance the
construction of housing for
Soviet immigrants. They have
been held up by the Bush ad-
ministration because of con-
either directly or indirectly
be used to expand Jewish
settlements in the ad-
ministered territories.

Spiced Red Cabbage

A New Year's twist, this dish makes a colorful addition to a tradi-
tional holiday table. Make a resolution to serve it often, too!

1/2 cup
1/4 tsp.
1/4 tsp.

shredded red cabbage
cider vinegar

2

1 tbsp.

ground nutmeg
tart apples, peeled
cored and diced
sugar

In a saucepan, combine shredded cabbage with all other ingre-
dients, except apples. Cover and cook over moderate heat for 15
minutes, tossing several times so the cabbage will cook evenly.
Add apples, and toss again. Cover, and cook 5 minutes longer.
Add sugar.
If more water is needed during cooking, add two or three table-
spoons, but when the dish is done, all moisture should have been
cooked away.
