embraces of Israeli leaders
but that doesn't stop him
from actually sending
American troops to Israel
when they are needed to pro-
tect Israel's civilian popula-
tion. In short, this President
who may not feel much per-
sonal affection for Israel is
making Israel more secure
every day.

And, for that, he deserves
credit and thanks. In the
final analysis, all the nice
rhetoric that politicians
routinely spout about Israel
isn't worth the proverbial
pot of warm spit if they
aren't willing to back those
words with tangible assis-
tance to Israel in its struggle
to survive. Mr. Bush skips
the rhetoric but provides the
help. For now, at least,
George Bush is deservedly a
Jewish hero. ❑

Israel's suffering — coupling
it in a sentence with that of
the people of Riyadh. After
the war, he will probably try
to ram some awful interna-
tional peace conference
down Israel's throat — one
that might even include
some PLO types. It probably
won't be too long before Mr.
Bush reverts to his previous
status as no great friend of
Israel.
But that doesn't change
the fact that right now
George Bush is taking more
pro-Israel actions than any
President since Richard
Nixon resupplied Israel dur-
ing the Yom Kippur War.
He may feel more warmly
about the Arab world than
he does about Israel, but
that doesn't stop him from
going to war with the most
dangerous Arab leader since
Nasser. He may avoid public

New York(JTA) — Faced
with a flood of volunteers,
the American Jewish Con-
gress is trying to make it
easier for Americans to do-
nate their services in Israel
during the Persian Gulf war
crisis.
"There has been an out-
pouring of concern and soli-
darity for the people of Israel
among many Americans,"
according to Henry
Siegman, executive director
of the AJCongress. "They
have offered to fly to Israel
and help out in those areas
in which they are most
needed."
A requirement for par-
ticipation is a working
knowledge of Hebrew or
Russian. Volunteers must be
prepared to spend a

minimum of two weeks in
Israel, the AJC announced.
Mr. Siegman stressed the
need in Israel for
psychiatrists, psychologists,
nurses and social workers.
There is a special need for
volunteers who can serve as
attendants in health care in-
stitutions, nursing homes
and institutions caring for
the disabled and for young
children, he said.
American volunteers can
also assist in relieving
Israeli health care profes-
sionals who have been work-
ing under great stress
around the clock.

Is British Ship Of State
Steering Toward Israel?

London (JTA) — Foreign
Secretary Douglas Hurd
seems to be steering Britain
toward a postwar Middle
East policy that is closer to
Israel's thinking than in the
past.
Mr. Hurd outlined his
ideas, which are supported
by Prime Minister John
Major, to his fellow min-
isters of the European
Community in Brussels this
week. At the same time,
Defense Secretary Tom King
lauded Israel's "tremendous
restraint" in face of what he
said was Saddam Hussein's

ill-conceived attempt to
draw it into the war.
Future British policy, Mr.
Hurd has indicated, would
support more flexible ar-
rangements for the West
Bank and Gaza Strip, taking
account of Israel's security
fears and Palestinian
demands for more freedom.
But the possibility of a Pa-
lestinian state is no longer
mentioned. Mr. Hurd said
the Palestine Liberation
Organization has
"undermined its credibility
by acting as an apologist for
Iraq."
