to understand the impor-
tance of taking responsibili-
ty for one's actions.
A friend of mine says, "If I
make a mistake and get
pregnant, I don't want to pay
for it the rest of my life."
But why shouldn't we be
responsible for the conse-
quences of our decisions?
Isn't that what it means to
be an adult?
A woman already has the
freedom to choose. The
choice is whether to have
sexual intercourse.
My other argument with
the "I'll do what I want with
my body" statement is based
on an article in Com-
monweal by David Carlin.
The problem with the
abortion issue is that neither
side is advocating evil, he
says. I agree. Those who op-
pose abortion don't do so be-
cause they want women to
suffer. And those who sup-
port the right of abortion
don't do so because they
want to see fetuses
destroyed.
In that case, Mr. Carlin
suggests, one must carefully
weigh the essence of both
positions. One group ad-
vocates the importance of
the freedom to choose. The
other speaks for the value of

personhood.

I'm not going to argue with
pro-choice advocates about
whether a fetus is a human
being. But they cannot deny
the fact that it is life. We all
learned it in school: when
the sperm and the egg meet,
conception occurs. Anti-

abortion workers believe
this life has ultimate value.
Pro-choice people say that
freedom of choice is the
ultimate value, that one
should be able to decide how
to make his existence wor-
thwhile and meaningful.
What is more important,
the freedom of choice or the
right of a living being to
grow and develop and con-
tinue its existence?
I answer this two ways,
both from my heart and from
Halachah.
Emotionally, I can't bear
the idea of labeling an inno-
cent living thing — even a
two-week-old fetus — unwor-
thy of life. The thought lit-
erally makes me tremble.
Halachah teaches us that
one of the most sacred
responsibilities we have is to
protect life. One is even
permitted to violate the
Sabbath to save a life.
Pro-choice advocates have
every right to work for their
cause. The freedom to speak
one's mind is a law guar-
anteed by the U.S. Constitu-
tion and a law that, as an
American, I wholeheartedly
support.
But as a Jew, I cannot
agree with those who band
together and try to present
abortion as a Jewish issue.
To them I say: join pro-choice
rallies if you choose; work on
abortion rights as in-
dividuals if you must. But do
not present your position for
abortion on demand as a
Jewish issue supported by
Halachah. That is a lie. ❑
