Holocaust," Mr. Meyerhoff
said at a Washington news
conference Jan. 9 at which
the survey results were
released.
He said this is why Holo-
caust educational efforts —
including the Holocaust
Memorial Museum under
construction in Washington
adjacent to the National
Mall — are so vital.
"These are precisely the
young people whom we ex-
pect to form a substantial
segment of museum visitors,
and whom we expect will be
shocked, moved and
ultimately enlightened by
what they learn," Mr.
Meyerhoff said.
He explained that this
latest survey about the
Holocaust shows that the
American public
"understands and supports"
the legacy of knowledge that
the museum will represent.
"Ninety-three percent of
all respondents strongly
agree with a central mission
of the museum — that we all
need a reminder that democ-
racy, human rights and
human values cannot be
taken for granted," Mr.
Meyerhoff said. ❑

Zionist Meeting
Is Urged

New York (JTA) — A fac-
tion within the World
Zionist Organization has re-
quested that an extraordin-
ary Zionist Congress be held
as soon as possible to address
the "enormous challenges"
facing Israel.
The extraordinary
meeting was urged Jan. 10
by the World Confederation
of United Zionists, the
largest Zionist group outside
Israel that is unaffiliated
with any political party. A
major member within the
confederation is Hadassah,
the Women's Zionist Organ-
ization of America.
"The grave threats to
Israel's security and well-
being in the wake of the
crisis in the Persian Gulf'
and the "historic aliyah" of
Jews from the Soviet Union
in unprecedented numbers
are among the challenges
requiring "the immediate
mobilization of all our
resources to meet these
critical needs," said a state-
ment released by Hadassah.
The decision to call a
meeting must be made by
the WZO Executive, based in
Jerusalem, which has in the
past acceded to such a re-
quest, a WZO official said.
The Zionist Congress is
normally held every four
years.
