Paris Magazine
Told To Recant

Paris (JTA) — An extreme
right-wing magazine has
been ordered to publish a
statement denouncing
racism and anti-Semitism
after a Paris court found it
had maligned the Jewish
community and placed it in
jeopardy.
The magazine, Sock of the
Month, published a banner
headline on its front cover
asking "Have The Jews
Pushed Us Into The (Gulf)
War?"
Judge Huguette Le Foyer
de Costil ruled that although
the publication appended a
question mark to its cover
headline, it "cast doubts
upon the entire Jewish
community, which is more-
over pointed to as a possible
source of trouble and runs a
(security) risk as such."
The judge added, "This
sort of article shows hatred
toward the Jews."

New York (JTA) —. The
Soviet crackdown in
Lithuania has aroused con-
cern for the status of an ex-
tensive Jewish archive that
the. nationalist Vilnius
government reportedly was
prepared to make available
to the YIVO Institute for
Jewish Research.
Samuel Norich, executive
director of YIVO, said he
was told in his last contact
with sources in Vilnius that
the Lithuanian Archives
Administration had signed
an agreement in December
that would permit YIVO to
begin microfilming all Jew-
ish collections in Lithuania.
That agreement was said
to have been sent by mail in
December, but "we have not
received it," Mr. Norich
said. "If it comes, we are
eager to proceed as quickly
as possible."
Mr. Norich, whose efforts
have been helped by Sajudis,
a major Lithuanian nation-
alist political group, said the
Lithuanian Jewish commun-
ity had been "anticipating a
crackdown for several
weeks."
The Lithuanian Jewish
collection is reported to in-
clude approximately 5,000
Jewish books, 20,000 - issues
of more than 150 Jewish
newspapers, 70 Torah scrolls
and the correspondence of
prewar Jewish luminaries
such as the rabbi known as
the Chafetz Chayim and
Yiddish linguist Max
Weinreich.
