Orchard Lake Road At Lone Pine Road • West Bloomfield 42 FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1991 Teachers' Aide Continued from preceding page dividually work with teachers." Sometimes teachers have difficulty coming to a supe- rior and admitting they need help in an area, Ms. Wohl said. "They can come to us and say I need help and work with our staff' ' in a confiden- tial atmosphere. "But what we really want to be is a center without walls," she said. "We see ourselves working not just within here, but we will be going out to schools. We want to take our show on the road." Ms. Silberg Loebl and Ms. Wohl intend to conduct teacher training workshops for various organizations such as the one scheduled for the Beth Abraham Hillel Moses teaching staff. They also want to reach out to the larger educational commun- ity. In April, the Resource Center will bring Dr. Shirley Raines, author of Story Stretchers for pre-school and kindergarten teachers inter- ested in learning how to be better storytellers. Ms. Silberg Loebl and Ms. Wohl are also working on developing programs for Jewish educators. This year, they created the CHAI pro- gram which brings parents of fifth-grade students at Adat Shalom into the Sun- day classroom. Although it began on a limited basis, they hope to make it a com- munity-wide program. While the pair are busy developing programs, con- ducting workshops, helping individual teachers and col- lecting more materials for the center, they also want input from educators, Ms. Silberg Loebl said. They en- courage local teachers to contribute their own creative educational ideas to the Resource Center. Mrs. Greenfield and Mrs. Ziffer, who teaches third grade at Akiva and courses at the Jewish Community High School, recently sub- mitted a morning prayer game to the Resource Center. In the game, students, using magnets, must put the morning prayers in the davening order. "What we have to do is capitalize on their strengths. Everyone has strengths," Ms. Silberg Loebl said. "This is not a one time service," Ms. Silberg Loebl said about the Resource Center. "We really want to help educators in their pro- fessional growth. We want to help people realize their potential." "If people feel they are get- ting the support they need then it will be a success," Ms. Wohl said. "We want to give educators every oppor- tunity to excel." Robert Lask, president of the Detroit Jewish Educators Council, called the center an important step in Jewish education, adding "I think it should have been done a long time ago." "I think teachers should use it," he said. "What we need to do is start a cam- paign. If we don't talk about it, educators won't use it. It's too good to waste it." ❑ Machon Plans Soviet Programs Machon L'Torah, the Jewish Learning Network of Michi- gan, plans a program for new- ly arrived Soviet women at 1 p.m., Feb. 17.
