Rug and carpet cleaning tips

Follow these helpful hints and your rugs and
carpeting will look better, longer

By Kenneth Snow

OPERATIONS MANAGER - SERVICES DIVISION

• Don't let a stain set in. Practically
every stain can be removed if it is
treated right away. It is the stain that
is ignored that can become perma-
nent. This is especially true with pet
stains. If you are worried about a
stain and think you need help to
remove it, call The Original
Hagopian's 24-Hour Emergency
Hot-Line at 399-2323 anytime, day or
night.
• Turn all area and oriental rugs.
Every six months be sure to turn any
loose rugs. Leaving them in the same
position for years at a time guaran-
tees they will have wear patterns in
them. Rotating them 180 degrees
assures that the rug will wear more
evenly. This can substantially in-
crease the life of your valuable orien-
tal and area rugs.
• Inspect area and oriental rugs
for worn selvages and fringes.
This can be very important to the life
of your rugs. The selvages (edges) and
fringes are on a rug to protect the pile
from premature wear. If they become
worn or broken, there is the possibil-
ity that your rugs pile can unravel
rapidly. It should be taken care of
promptly. The Original Hagopian
has six full-time master restorers
who can help.
• No plants on rugs. The leading
cause of ruined carpets and rugs is
dry rot brought about by placing pot-
ted plants directly on them. The pot
does not have to leak to cause a prob-
lem. Regular watering cools the

3 DAYS ONLY

pot and causes condensation to form
on its underside, away from this rots
the foundation of the rug it is sitting
on. Repairs are extremely expensive
since entire areas of the carpet or
oriental rug must be completely
rewoven. Save yourself the grief: no
plants on rugs. But, if you absolutely
must have a plant on a rug, put it on
a trivet so air can circulate under it.
• Clean regularly. Your carpeting
and oriental rugs will almost never
wear out from simply being walked
on. What really wears out your rugs
is the dirt that gets deep into the pile
and "saws" away at the base of each
fiber. Vacuuming simply cannot
remove it all. To do the job right it
must be professionally cleaned.
Keep these few simple hints in
mind and you can enjoy years of
beauty and satisfaction from your
carpeting and rugs.
