Not Just
Whistling Dixie

Whether or not Baghdad-
based CNN reporter Peter
Arnett is transmitting Iraqi
war propaganda as some
critics have charged is, for a
brief moment, perhaps less
of a mystery than a phrase
the correspondent used in
Newsweek to refer to 'Israel.
In a telephone interview
with Newsweek senior writer
Jonathan Alter, Mr. Arnett
said that his most recent
assignment has been "in a
place we call Dixie." After
that term for the Old South,
Newsweek editors inserted
in brackets that Mr. Arnett
was referring to Israel.
Mr. Alter stated that he
had never before heard
Israel called "Dixie." When
Mr. Arnett used the phrase,
he had "looked quizzically at
other editors in the room
(who were listening to the
interview on a speaker
phone). They knew it meant
Israel."
Mr. Alter speculated that
the phrase implied that
Israel treated Palestinians
much as the South had once
treated blacks.
Not so, said a veteran
Middle East correspondent
for a major newspaper who
preferred to remain anony-
mous. "It's a stupid term
and one I never used," he
said. "It was used by
reporters who were based in
Lebanon who occasionally
went south to Israel. If you
crossed the 'Mason-Dixon
Line' between Lebanon and
Israel, you were in 'Dixie.' "
But, he suggested, "Dixie"
also had some utility. "Back
in the heyday of the PLO
presence in Lebanon," he
said, "some reporters didn't
want to say they had just
been to Israel. So they spoke
about 'Dixie.' "
Also on the Arnett front:
Sen. Alan Simpson (R-Wyo.)
called the CNN correspon-
dent "a sympathizer" with
Iraq whose reporting during
the Vietnam War was biased
and whose brother-in-law
was "active in the Viet
Cong."
CBS News reporter Terry
Smith, who was the New
York Times Saigon bureau
chief, told the Washington
Post that Sen. Simpson's.
charges were "ludicrous."
Interestingly, Sen. Simp-
son told Saddam Hussein
last April that his "problems
lie with the Western media
and not with the U.S.
governmerit."
