Metropolitan Detroit, the
seminar provided factual in-
formation on Israel and up-
to-date information on
events in Israel from Ofra
Ben Yakov, a diplomat at
the Israeli consulate in
Chicago. Educators also
received advice on how to
help children cope with the
psychological effects of war.
"We need to open the line
of communication so we can
deal with all our anxieties,"
David Techner of Ira Kauf-
man Chapel told the 100
educators from all Jewish af-
filiations who attended the
seminar. Mr. Techner often
speaks to families or groups
of children on issues as
serious as death or their own
vulnerability. He urged
teachers to take time out
and talk about the Persian
Gulf war in the classroom.
Every night during dinner,
he and his wife spend a half-
hour talking to their three
children about the war, Mr.
Techner said. He uses the
time to ask what they heard
that day about the conflict
and to soothe their fears.
Parents should not give
false assurances about this
war, Mr. Techner said.
Although parents should say
the conflict is taking place
far away from home, it is
okay if children hear parents
say, "I don't know," he said.
"Kids need to hear your
fears. While we are all confi-
dent of the outcome of this
war, we really don't know."
"When I was 15 years old,
there was a place called
Vietnam. My mother
assured me that country
would cause me no pain," he
said. "Well, it was a big deal.
It was a very big deal in my
life."
Now his son, Ari, is 11
years old, Mr. Techner said.
He is worried that in seven
years his son could be
drafted. When Ari shared
his concern about the draft,
they talked about it.
When his younger son,
Chad, 9, asked him if he was
worried about terrorism in
the United States a day
before he and his wife took
an airplane to New York,
Mr. Techner said no. But he
discovered his son was wor-
ried. To ease his son's fears,
when the plane arrived safe-
ly in New York, Mr. Techner
left a message at Chad's
school saying everything
was okay.
"We need to plan a
strategy," Mr. Techner said.
"There is a great lack of con-
sistency between the
parents, grandparents and
the school system. Children
need consistent informa-
tion."
