security and sacrificing lives
for a short-lived international
pat on the back. Meanwhile,
Israelis are leaving Tel Aviv
and the country and Israel
has become a much more
dangerous place to live or
visit.
Not since 1948 has a major
population center taken a
direct hit. No matter what
happens to Saddam he will be
remembered as an Arab hero
for penetrating Israel's
defenses and destroying her
principles of self-defense.
American Jews are con-
tributing to Israel's crisis of
confidence by playing out
their role as the illusionary
defenders of Israel. This at-
titude is paternalistic and
corrupts the Israelis as well
as ourselves.
All who genuinely care
about Israel's survival should
immediately call for a cut-off
of all non-military aid to
Israel and for an immediate
Israeli retaliation against
Iraq. Psychologically Israel's
deterrent has been damaged
by putting Israel's security in
U.S. hands.
To minimize the damage,
Israel must be forced to
become truly independent
financially as well as
psychologically.
Ironically, Zionist philoso-
phy views international sup-
port as the only safeguard
against another Holocaust
and it is precisely this support
that is preventing and has
always prevented Israel from
successfully defending
herself.
Hopefully, we will learn the
proper historical lessons
before we repeat our past
errors.
marching in, carrying their
posters and singing their
theme song. The convention
broke into the Yachad song
and I saw my son and other
Detroit boys embrace and
dance with Seth and Gavin
and the whole Yachad group.
I saw in my son something
that every parent hopes will
develop in his child, a loving
and caring human being.
He cared deeply that the
Yachad kids would feel part of
the group and he knew how
hard it was for many to at-
tend such a convention.
Both of my sons have grown
and developed because of
their involvement with
Yachad. I'm grateful to
Shayndee Lasson and NCSY
for that opportunity.

The Answer To
Palestinian Problem
Remember: Jordan is
Palestine.
One day when the war with
Iraq is over, a diplomatic solu-
tion to the overall Mideast
conflict will be sought.
The Palestinians deserve a
homeland. Have this map in
mind.

Happy To See
Yachad Article
Thank you for the wonder-
ful article (Feb. 1) on Yachad.
I think it is important for the
community to be aware of its
existence.
Two and a half years ago,
my son Ari asked us to attend
the closing banquet at a
regional NCSY convention.
As each chapter was introduc-
ed, they marched in carrying
banners, wearing costumes,
singing and dancing.
Naturally, when the Detroit
NCSY group was called, I was
especially proud. I knew
many of the youngsters from
when they were babies, and
here they were, young adults
committed to Judaism.
The most touching mo-
ment, and one which still
brings tears to my eyes, was
when the Yachad group came

Israel Abolishes
Smallest Coin
Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel
is abolishing its smallest de-
nomination coin, the agorah,
which the Bank of Israel
says costs three times its
value to produce.
The tiny bronze coin, wor-
th half a U.S. cent, will be
phased out of circulation
over a period of three years,
the Ministerial Economics
Committee decided this
week.
But prices will be rounded
off immediately to the
nearest five agorot.
