Students Send
Purim Gifts

New York (JTA) — The
United Synagogue of
America, the association of
Conservative synagogues, is
mobilizing students at its af-
filiated congregational and
day schools to send
or
mishloach manot,
Purim gifts, to soldiers of the
Israel Defense Force, in
keeping with the Jewish
tradition of gift-giving on
the Purim festival, which
this year falls on the night of
Feb. 27.
According to Rabbi Robert
Abramson, head of the
United Synagogue's Edu-
cation Department,
"Operation Shalach Manot"
offers Conservative
youngsters an opportunity to
teach and participate in two
mitzvot — the giving of
mishloach manot, gifts to
others on Purim, and show-
ing support to individual
Israeli soldiers."
Students as well as mem-
bers of United Synagogue
Youth and the Kadima
youth group will be en-
couraged to contribute $18
so that an Israeli soldier
may receive a mishloach
manot package on Purim
and a pair of warm army
socks.
Adults may also purchase
packages from a school or
youth group.

Pope Offers
Sympathy

Rome (JTA) — Pope John
Paul II expressed sympathy
with Israel after the third
and deadliest Iraqi missile
attack on the Tel Aviv area
in less than a week.
During his weekly public
audience Jan. 20, the pontiff
said he felt "solidarity with
how much they are suffering
in the state of Israel for the
contemptible bombardments
of recent days and yester-
day."
His remarks were the first
specific papal condemnation
of the Iraqi SCUD missile
attacks on Israel that have
injured over 100 people since
they began on Jan. 18 and
caused three fatalities.
The pope also expressed
solidarity with the people of
Iraq and of the other coun-
tries involved in the conflict.
His remarks, however,
were the first time he has re-
ferred specifically and by
name to Israel, although he
has made several ardent ap-
peals for peace since the Gulf
war broke out.
