KIRSTEN JEFT SILVER-
MAN has received the
William J. Branstrom Award
for outstanding freshman
academic achievement at the
University of Michigan.
Kirsten, daughter of Sy and
Paula Silverman Weberman
of Orchard Lake and Dr.
Gerald Silverman of Windsor,
Ontario, achieved a 3.8
average as a freshman science
major.
Kirsten graduated cum
laude from Andover High
School, Bloomfield Hills, in
June 1990.

MEGGIN KAHN SILVER-
MAN has been awarded
honors in the national Nancy
Thorpe Poetry Contest. Meg-
gin, daughter of Sy and Paula
Silverman Weberman of Or-
chard Lake and Dr. Gerald
Silverman of Windsor, On-
tario, has won both locally
and in state competitions.
Her poetry has been publish-
ed locally.
Meggin, an honor student
at Andover High School,
Bloomfield Hills, will attend
the James Madison School of
Humanities at Michigan
State University in the fall.

LYNN ROSETT CHIO,
daughter of Michael and
Joyce Rosett, earned her
bachelor's degree in business
administration from the
Haworth College of Business
at Western Michigan Univer-
sity. Ms. Chio is employed as
an account executive with
Adams Outdoor Advertising
of Kalamazoo.

Hillel Groups
Plan Series

The Jewish Students
Organization/Hillel, the
Catholic Chaplaincy and the
United Ministries in Higher
Education at Oakland
University will present the
second part of a three-part
series on ethical issues noon
Feb. 12 in the Fireside
Lounge. Professor V.
Khapoya, political science,
and Ms. Eleanor Reynolds,
director of residence halls,
will discuss "Institutional
Racism."
Rev. James T. Lyons,
Ecumenical Institute, will
speak noon Feb. 13 in the
Fireside Lounge, on "The Per-

sian Gulf: Pursuing Peace."
His talk is sponsored by the
Jewish Students Organiza-
tion/Hillel and is free and
open to the public.
The deadline to order
Purim packages from JSO/
Hillel is 1 p.m. Feb. 19. The
orders will be available for
pick-up in Oakland Center
the next day, from 10 a.m.-1
p.m. There is a charge. If
customers would prefer, the
cost of the packages may be
donated to JSO/Hillel, and it
will then be contributed to
Yad Ezra, the kosher food
pantry.

U-M Hillel
Sets Program

The Hillel Foundation of
the University of Michigan,
Ann Arbor, will sponsor the
following programs.
On Feb. 7, the Hillel Social
committee will host a Happy
Hour at Dominick's from 5-7
p.m. On Feb. 8, the group will
have a veggie Shabbat
potluck at 7:30 p.m. in the
Lawyer's Club Lounge in the
Law Quad. The speaker will
be Judith Endelman on the
"Rise and Fall of the Borscht
Belt." Judith Endelman was
co-curator of the "Americans
on Vacation" exhibit at the
Henry Ford Museum. The
famous Jewish resort area,
the Catskills, is the lens
through which Jewish life in
America, 1930s-1970s, will be
viewed.

U-M Offers
Judaic Studies

Kenneth Stow, professor of
Jewish history at the Univer-
sity of Haifa, is the Louis and
Helen Padnos Visiting Pro-
fessor of Judaic Studies at the
University of Michigan this
term. Professor Stow will
teach courses on "Jewish
History from the Post-Biblical
Period to the Early Modern
period" and "The Jews of the
Renaissance."
Professor Stow is a
specialist in the history of
Italian Jewry in the late
medieval and early modern
periods. His books include
Catholic Thought and Papal
Jewry Policy, 1555-1593; Tax-
ation, Community and State:
The Jews and the Fiscal
Foundations of the Early
Modern Papal State.
