rtist Caren Shaye,
of Franklin, is a chic
bag lady. She has

worldly possessions in her
namesake boutique in
downtown Franklin. Her
quaint store, in a converted
clapboard home with floral
wallpaper, features one-of-a-
kind objects from jewelry to
clothing. Among her Euro-
pean treasures are her spe-
cialty — elegant evening
bags.
Mrs. Shaye sells antique
purses that date from the
1890s to 1940s, and she pro-
vides a national service of
repairing and updating vin-
tage handbags. She replaces
missing beads, mends lin-
ings, fixes frames and even
crochets the hooks for clasps.

cord, glass beads and anti-
que buttons. She scours
American and Parisian flea
markets searching for anti-
que handbags. If she can't
find a purse, she buys old
frames, long chains or or-
nate details. She plans to
return to Paris this summer
to study and continue her
designs.
"It's been a progressive
business, from my love of
designing necklaces to str-
inging beads on a purse
worn across the body," said
Mrs. Shaye.
She receives requests from
across the country to repair
handbags. She is considered
an expert in the field. Muse-
urns often call to ask her ad-
vice and information about
antique bags.
The antique bags in her
boutique sell for $450-
$1,000. There are some bags
that sell for around $100
that need repair work. She
also carries a line of jewelry
beginning at $40, silk
scarves and handknit
sweaters. She showcases
