the museum was jammed
with visitors. Others picked
up phone receivers to hear
oral histories of immigrants.
We went to the restored dor-
mitory room. Standing in a
small space crowded with
other visitors, we saw the sim-
ple, narrow three-tiered bunk
beds, each with a plain grey
wool blanket, where 300 peo-
ple — called detainees —
would sleep at night while
they waited for clearance to
go to Manhattan.
The sight of those narrow,
cramped beds, one atop the
other, was a vivid reminder of
the difficult circumstances of
my grandparents' voyage.
Though the conditions were
harsh, the immigrants
sweetened the voyage with
the personal mementos they
carried across the seas and
onto Ellis Island. The exhibit
titled "Family Treasures"
presents a varied assortment
of concrete objects. The collec-
tion of artifacts was donated
to the National Park Service
by families who came during
the peak immigration years
of the late 19th and early
20th century.
Their treasured objects
reminded us of the particular
individuals and families who
passed through Ellis Island.
On display, for example, was
an object which looks like a
large fly swatter; but it was
actually a quilt and pillow
beater used to beat linens
every Friday before Sabbath
began and was donated by a
Polish Jewish immigrant.
We also saw the tefillin
brought by Nathan Hofstet-
ter, who came to America in
1899, and the Torah
breastplate of Benjamin
Mintz, who left Poland in
1890. On another wall, we
noted the words of Fannie
Shoock, a Polish Jewish im-
migrant who came to the New
World in 1921 and was inter-
viewed in 1985.
In this same exhibit,
separate cases were devoted
to individual families. We saw
the family portraits of the
Mirelowitz family from
Lithuania. The husband was
photographed in uniform; he
was a soldier in the Czar's ar-
my who escaped under his
wife's maiden name. Included
in the display were his birth
certificate, witnessed by a
rabbi, and his inspection card
when he came to America on
the S.S. President Grant in
1909.
History continued when we
saw the exhibit titled "New
Americans!' It included a
whole wall covered with close-
up photographs of im-
migrants. The camera cap-
tured their smiles, their fears,
