Dr. Kutner told the Kupat
Cholim that he could make
"a significant impact" on
the waiting list for critical
care. "I told them, 'Just give
us two weeks and we'll clean
up your list.' "
The team performed the
surgery at a private medical
facility in Haifa, contracting
with the Kupat Cholim. The
same day surgery facility
called the Horev Clinic is
only three months old.
"Same day surgery hasn't
taken hold in Israel like in
America," Dr. Kutner said.
Same day surgery would
be the least likely method
chosen in cases involving
immigrants, Dr. Kutner
said. "When there are lang-
uage barriers, physicians
traditionally use general
anesthesia. (Patients) can
freak out (if they don't
understand what is happen-
ing)," he explained.
Outpatient surgery re-
quires that the patient be
awake during the procedure.
For immigrants, a translator
would need to be in the
room.
Dr. Kutner's first Ethio-
pian patient was a 72-year-
old immigrant named Datsa
Iso who was going blind from
cataracts. He was awake
when he underwent surgery
with local anesthesia, a
medical accomplishment
that made the Israel _ i press,
said Dr. Kutner.
Dr. Kutner said he plans to
form an American task force
of consulting physicians and
health professionals in all
fields who can advise the
Kupat Cholim on implemen-
ting efficient and cost-saving
same day surgery in Israel.

Weizmann Fund
To Cure Gehrig's
Rehovot, Israel (JTA) —
An anonymous American
donor has established a fund
at the Weizmann Institute of
Science to search for the
causes of amyotrophic later-
al sclerosis, or ALS, the
degenerative disease of the
muscles also known as Lou
Gehrig's Disease.
The endowment estab-
lished the Franz Rosenzweig
Fund for ALS Related
Research at Weizmann,
named to honor the late
German-born Jewish
philosopher and theologian
who died of ALS in 1929 at
the age of 43.
