Yuli relates however, that although censorship still ex- ists and continues to blend at times with anti-Semitism, the state censors have also liberalized their practices in recent years. Boris Kagarlitsky wrote of the 1988 Soviet reforms, which led to the easing of of- ficial anti-Semitism, in his critically acclaimed book, Farewell Perestroika (available in an English , translation from Verso). In 1982, Boris was imprisoned and charged with publicizing anti-Soviet propaganda. He was incarcerated for 13 months without standing trial and was freed only after Brezhnev's death. Boris' determination to change Soviet society was on- ly strengthened by his ex- periences as a prisoner. In 1988, he became the first Soviet citizen to win a libel suit against a Soviet newspaper. Boris successfully sued Pravda for falsely accus- ing him of being disloyal to the state. Boris profited little financially from the case, but feels that he helped to further both governmental reforms and free speech by winning the decision. Boris, who is now 32, is a committed reformer and was elected (as a non-communist) to the Moscow Soviet (city council) last spring. Boris and Yuli are both anx- ious about the turmoil that is expected this winter. Moscow is on the verge of famine, and the Soviet Union is coming apart. Yuli doesn't want to emigrate, but he would like to lecture abroad to escape the worst of the coming crisis. Boris is well known on the lecture circuit in the States and will be here during much of the winter. Boris and Yuli are commit- ted to riding out the coming hard times in Soviet society. Why? They are Soviet in- tellectuals. Russian is their language, and they have both contributed richly to its literature. I also sensed in both father and son a bit of the original Jewish liberal spirit that held such bright hopes for the Soviet Revolution. The Kagarlitskys are very much a remnant in this regard by comparison with the majori- ty of Soviet Jewry, which will continue to flee the Soviet Union. Nevertheless, while Boris and Yuli both fear they are on the brink of disaster as Rus- sian Jews, both are willing to gamble on continued reforms. ❑ -_,...
