Shabbat Story Hour II

ewishVocational Service

with Rabbi Sherwin Wine

,,

ly in their new Rosh Hash-
anah and Pesach clothing.
Every week I count the days
until Shabbat, until I savor
our special family Shabbat
dinners when we bless our
growing children and sing
Shabbat zmirot together.
Each week, I anxiously await
our quiet talks and peaceful
family moments that we can
have together — only on
Shabbat — without the ring-
ing telephone and the detrac-
tion of TV and the work place.
Only by keeping Jewish law
for many years have I been
lucky enough to understand
its beauty and join in with
our ancestors at Mt. Sinai —
"we will do and gain greater
understanding of life, of God,
of ourselves."
The Ramban teaches us
that the Na'asei V'neshma is
an acclamation of joy. By
bringing God's presence into
our lives on a daily basis, our
potential for joy is limitless.
Na'asei V'neshma — we will
do and experience the incredi-
ble joy of Jewish life. It is a joy
which returns us continually
to Mt. Sinai and binds one
Jew to another and allows us
to experience the intensity of
God's love. ❑

"I alway's knew I could count on JVS"

Lillian Finkelstein graduated from
Northern High School in 1936,
at the tail end of the Great Depression.
Jobs were scarce in Detroit,
so Lillian turned to the Placement Bureau.
which would later become
the Jewish Vocational Service.

The agency found her a series of
temporary bookkeeping jobs.
Although they didn't pay much -
sometimes only S6 a week - they helped
to keep Lillian's family going. " I always
knew I could count on something, from
JVS," says Lillian. now retired and living
in West Bloomfield.

After taking, time off to raise her children,
Lillian returned to JVS in
the mid-1950s. This time the agency found
her a satisfying permanent job,
which she kept for many years.

Today. JVS still helps people like Lillian
find success and fulfillment in
their working lives. As we celebrate our
50th anniversary, we invite the entire
community to share our pride in a
half-century of service to the community.
