In Israel, the Gulf War is
renewing memories of the
Holocaust, particularly as
Scud missiles which might
be carrying gas keep landing
in Tel Aviv. Some Israelis
are reacting with humor.
Cracked Hirsch Goodman,
editor of the Jerusalem
Report to New York maga-
zine, "It's ironic that we've
finally gotten around to
distributing six million gas
masks — 50 years after we
really need them."
But there may be a more
direct link between the
Scuds and Nazi Germany
than most people realize.
Time reveals that the 37-
foot-long Scud traces its
lineage to a 1940s design for
the V-2 rocket, which the
Nazis sent crashing into
London during the last days
of World War II. The Soviets
eventually produced a ripoff
of the V-2, which NATO called
the "SS-1A Scunner." For
short, it was code-named
"Scud."

Investigation
In Belgium

Brussels (JTA) — The
Simon Wiesenthal Center
has asked the Justice Min-
istry to "investigate with all
urgency" whether 14
suspected Nazi war
criminals who entered
Belgium after World War II
are still alive and living in
this country.
At least three of the
suspects named were mem-
bers of the 12th Lithuanian
Auxiliary Police Battalion,
which murdered thousands
of Jews in Byelorussia.
Six members of that unit
who found refuge in the
United States under false
pretenses after the war have
been stripped of their U.S.
citizenship. Another is
under investigation by the
British government's Com-
mission of Inquiry on War
Criminals.
