Revisionist
Not Jailed

Bonn (JTA) — A former
schoolteacher who circulated
booklets denying gas
chambers existed at
Auschwitz got a stiff fine but
no prison term in a Wupper-
tal court last week.
State Prosecutor Frank
Heinrichs had demanded a
six-year sentence for Ernst-
Gunter Kogel, 64, who
chairs a group called "The
All-German Political
Association."
Instead, Judge Winfried
Keiluweit imposed an
$8,400 fine for incitement to
hatred and for offending
Jews who suffered in the
Holocaust. She called Mr.
Kogel a "forger of history."
The defendant claimed
that his thesis was proved by
the British writer, David Ir-
ving, a Holocaust revi-
sionist. The court ruled that
Irving could not be taken se-
riously as an historian.
