Campaign Sees Greater
Non-Jewish Response

ay the Lord bless all
of you. I am praying
for Israel." That's
all the note read.
Inside the envelope was a
$100 check for the Allied
Jewish Campaign. There
was no telephone number,
just a name and a Southgate
address.
A few days later, the cam-
paign received two checks
totaling $200. The note
enclosed simply read "to be
used for the brave people in
Israel." One check was from
a woman in Livonia, the
other from a West Bloom-
field woman. Both were not
Jewish.
Since Scud missiles began
hitting Tel Aviv, unsolicited
campaign donations from
non-Jews have risen, said
Allan Gelfond, campaign di-
rector. "I don't want to say
there has been an outpour-
ing of non-Jewish response,"
Mr. Gelfond said. "But there
has been an increase in non-
Jewish giving. We are get-
ting one or two every day."
"This is the first time in
my memory that we had this
unsolicited response to the
Jewish community, said Mr.
Gelfond, who attributes the
increase to the crisis situa-
tion in Israel and the mass
exodus of Jews from the
Soviet Union to Israel and
America. "This non-Jewish
response has been un-
solicited. They found us."
"Their gifts are not in-
significant," Mr. Gelfond
said, adding the donations
average between $200 and
$500.
It's not only the money,
Mr. Gelfond said. "It's the
care they are expressing.
They want to help out."
A handful of non-Jews
even attended the recent ral-
ly in support of Israel and
the U.S.-led coalition troops
in the Persian Gulf, he said.
"A number of them just
wanted to express their soli-
darity with Israel."
