Palestinian, Israelis Get
\- Human Rights Awards
/--'
Vienna (JTA) — Two
Israeli doves and a Palestin-
ian nationalist were among
the 24 recipients of the
Bruno Kreisky Human
Rights Prizes.
The prizes are named for
the late Jewish-born
chancellor of Austria. His
abiding interest in Middle
East peace was emphasized
by Mayor Helmut Zilk of
Vienna in his speech at the
awards ceremony Jan. 19.
The ceremony was held
after the second Iraqi missile
attack on Israel, which,
speakers noted, was hardly
an occasion for joy and
jubilation.
Most of the prizes went to
organizations engaged in
human rights and human-
itarian activities.
The individual recipients
included Yael Dayan, an au-
thor and journalist who is
the daughter of the late
Israeli foreign minister and
defense minister, Moshe
Dayan. She was cited for
contributing significantly to
the dialogue between
Israelis and Palestinians.
Another recipient was
Israeli lawyer Felicia
Langer, who presently lives
in Germany. She was
honored for serving as legal
counsel to West Bank Pales-
tinians faced with deporta-
tion, arrest and the punitive
destruction of their homes.
The Palestinian winner of
the Kreisky Award was
Faisal Husseini, a promi-
nent intellectual and jour-
nalist from East Jerusalem,
who preaches non-violent
resistance to Israeli rule in
the territories, though
Israeli officials say he is a
leading organizer of the in-
tifada.
The jury cited Husseini's
efforts to find "a peaceful
solution of the conflicts bet-
ween Israelis and Palestin-
ians through negotiations."
An award also was given
to the International Center
for Peace in the Middle East,
an organization headed by
Chaim Cohen, former presi-
dent of Israel's High Court of
Justice.
Christians, Jews Attend
Evangelical Breakfast
Washington (JTA) —
Evangelical Christians,
Jews and "Messianic Jews"
prayed together at the 10th
annual National Christian
Prayer Breakfast for Israel,
which for the first time took
place during a major crisis.
"Disruptions of families,
threats to loved ones and the
constant preoccupation and
concern with war — these
things help us to under-
stand, or at least to begin to
understand, the sacrifices
that have been made in
Israel," former Attorney
> General Edwin Meese told
the 600 participants in the
Jan. 30 breakfast, sponsored
by the Tennessee-based Re-
ligious Roundtable.
This year's breakfast
featured an attempt at
building a new Evangelical
Christian group to support
Israel politically and econ-
omically, called Watchmen
on the Walls, from Isaiah
62:6., which reads: "I have
set watchmen on thy walls,
0 Jerusalem, which shall
/-
never hold their peace day
nor night."
About 125 of those present
attended a Religious Round-
table forum afterward ad-
dressed by representatives of
Jewish groups, including
Americans for a Safe Israel
and CAMERA, the Com-
mittee for Accuracy in Mid-
dle East Reporting in
America.
They also heard from
Raphael Farber, Israel's
tourism commissioner for
North America.
After that, 160 boarded
buses to the Israeli Em-
bassy, where they were
given Israeli-grown olive
and palm branches to mark
the Tu B'Shevat holiday,
which fell on Jan. 30. Many
of them waved miniature
U.S. and Israel flags along
with the branches and joined
in singing the Hebrew
melodies "Hinei Ma Tov"
and "Bashanah Haba'ah."
Zalman Shoval, Israel's
ambassador to the United
States, thanked the crowd
for the "pleasure and privi-
lege" of being invited.
Vice President Dan
Quayle canceled his plans to
attend the breakfast so he
could go to the funeral for
the late king of Norway,
King Olav V.
Pleasant sounds, sights and
smells put one in good spirit.
