Yiddish Record
Grammy Nominee

The record "Partisans of
Vilna: The Songs of World
War II Jewish Resistance,"
was nominated as a finalist in
the traditional folk category
of the Grammy Awards. The
album is the first Yiddish
language recording to be
nominated for a Grammy.
The songs on the album were
originally heard in the
documentary, Partisans of
Vilna, a film about Jewish
resistance against the Nazis
in the Vilna Ghetto, made by
The Ciesla Foundation.
Recorded by Flying Fish
Records, the album was pro-
duced by Henry Sapoznik,
music consultant and resear-.
cher for the film and Josh
Waletzky, the director and
editor of the film. Former
Detroiter Aviva Kempner,
producer of the film, was the
executive producer of the
album. All the principal per-
formers are among the lead-
ing exponents of the contem-
porary Yiddish cultural
revival which helps to define
the rich Yiddish repertoire for
the next generation.
The National Endowment
for the Humanities provided
the funding for the record in-
serts, which were printed by
the Washington Jewish Week.

But for now, Mr. Benjamin
is basking in the bonanza
that is Mermaids.As he
hunts the Hollywood hills
for future projects, Mr. Ben-
jamin talks about what he
has learned in eight years of
directing.
"I've learned," says the
experienced movie maker,
"that what you need to know
is endless." ❑

whose only carp with critics
of the film is on that one
point. "The film is about
people and the heart."
While Mr. Benjamin's
heart is in directing, there is
that space in his soul still re-
served for acting. "I miss ac-
ting," he says. "But every
time you sign on for one of
these," he says of directing a
movie, "you're out of com-
mission for months."
Mr. Benjamin did find
time recently to share stage
space with the love of his life
in Love Letters. He and Ms.
Prentiss starred together in
the A.R. Gurney play, which
requires little rehearsal
time, as two actors read
their characters' love letters
out loud.
He would love to do more
theater, says Mr. Benjamin,
whose credits include
Broadway's The Norman
