he Women's Division
of the Jewish Welfare
Federation held a
"Food For Thought" lun-
cheon on Jan. 24 at the Bir-
mingham Community
House. Barbara Goldman,
executive director of the
Michigan Council for the
Arts, spoke on censorship in
the arts. Ms. Goldman
echoed the thoughts of the
100-plus women in the au-
dience, saying it is hard to
concentrate during the days
when greater stories exist.
However, she enlightened
the patrons on the recent
censorship concerns. She ex-
plained that there are con-
gressmen who have narrow
views on censorship in our
country. Since the Robert
Maplethorpe photographic
exhibit controversy in Cin-
cinnati, there is a heighten-
ed awareness.
She also discussed the
impending budget cuts for
the arts in Michigan. She
urged people to write Lans-
ing and support the arts be-
cause many institutions
could be forced to close.
