Dr. Lawrence Hoffman,
author, lecturer and liturgist,
will be the scholar-in
residence for the 49th annual
Glazer Institute Feb. 9 at
Temple Beth El.
The Glazer Institute
reaches out to the Catholic,
Protestant and Eastern Or-
thodox clergy of metropolitan
Detroit, presenting Jewish
lecturers who annually ad-
dress issues of mutual con-
cern in a day long seminar.
Dr. Hoffman was a student
rabbi at Temple Beth Or of
the Deaf in New York City.
During the three years he
spent at the Temple, he
pioneered in the development
of a sign language expressive
of Jewish concepts so that his
congregants could more easi-
ly claim their place in
Judaism. In 1973, he receiv-
ed his Ph.D. in liturgy and .
now serves on the faculty of
the HUC-JIR. Among his
works are The Canonization
of the Synagogue Service and

American Rabbis.
Dr. Hoffman will speak at
both Friday evening and
Saturday morning services at
the temple and at a Brother-
hood breakfast Sunday morn-
ing. His weekend topic will be
the "Americanization of
Judaism: Looking to the
Twenty-first Century." Friday
evening he will speak on
"How We Pray Is Who We
Are: This Is Your Life
American Jewry." On Satur-
day morning, he will discuss
"Beyond Limits and Truth:
Can Judaism Give Us Mean-
ing?" Sunday's topic will be
"The New Spirituality: Look-
ing for God in Birmingham,
Michigan."
